If it is dry grass it can be used as bedding / litter .
If it is green they will probably eat it ..digg into it , etc
Moving stuff around in the freezer so I can get more ice in before little girls party tonight. Came across a couple bags of freezer burnt veggies that I'll toss to the chickens. Also have this fully cooked processed ham log stuff that my mom gave us a couple years back. We ate one and didn't like it. It is 640 mg sodium per 2oz serving, way too salty for us in addition to tasting weird. Would something this salty be ok for the chickens? I have 2, would only give them one at a time. Or should I just garbage it?
Welcome to The Thread & chickens .Hey folks. New chicken person here, got four for eggs and pest control. I'm in Oswego county. Today will be day three of chickens, and we've already gotten two eggs. They're even starting to go in the coop without wrangling! We converted an old shed into a makeshift chicken coop, learning as we go.
That looks very nice.Slept in this morning. DH and I couldn't believe it that we got to sleep in and were still up before the kids. Guess all the fresh air at the lake yesterday really tired the out..The feathered kids were really not happy that I slept in. They were all screaming at me this morning...Very busy/crazy day today..Where to begin...
The Delaware girl that I have that got her head pecked really bad isn't doing as well I had hoped. She is all healed up, but there is definitely some neurological damage done. She can't stand very well and lays around most of the time. She has a hard time getting around outside. I have her in with my Polish girls and they seem to be getting along really well without any fighting. I have had to make a little ramp for her to get up into the coop. Doesn't seem that she can jump at all. The problem is that she seems to be getting worse so if things continue on this path I'm going to have to put her down. I don't have a problem with a very special needs bird, but if her quality of life gets to bad then I will have no choice.
The darn fox is back again. I let the chickens out and they were over by the compost pile and next thing I know the fox is chasing them around and he got a hold of my silver laced cochin rooster. I went running with the hammer in my hand and he put him down long enough to get a better grip and that was just enough for the roo to get loose and run away. I went yelling and then came in the house and got our coon dog and let him get on the trail. He was a good dog and followed it a while, but the big baby wouldn't go through some prickers so he gave up. Had our friend stop by and move all the traps closer to home where it came out of instead of up in the woods. The cat isn't happy that it is going to have to stay inside. I don't want him getting caught in some of the traps. He wouldn't stand a chance. We are going to leave them there for a few days then we will start to work on clearing some of the weeds where it seems to lay in wait. i have given thought to the hedgerows, but for right now they aren't going to work for us..We are going to be marking our property as much as possible with everything we can.
Worked more on the hoop coop...almost done!!Just have to finish the front then work on the floor and roosts then all done... I think that the turkeys have doubled in size in the last week and are way to big for what they are in so the sooner I get it done the better.![]()
