NY chicken lover!!!!

Akaruby...are you sure those silkies are boys?? Am I missing something? Silkies are good at hiding their sexl and the bottom pic doesn't look boy to me. Top pic could go either way.

Went to the dutchess county fair yesterday. No poultry, just pics. Watched the kids show their Holstein calves, saw all the critters, watched the dog agility and dog dock jump, ate fried dough, had a milkshake and a pulled pork on a burger with melted cheddar on top. Thank goodness my daughter split all of it with me. Bought some apple jack and watched the draft horse pull. That was cppl. Winner was a pair of Belgium that pulled 9800 pounds. It was a perfect day for the fair and we had fun.

Work keeps me busy but I do pop in to see what's up. Bedtime now. Working tomorrow.

You sound busy and happy - good combination!

Been trying to get some FF but TSC is out. I've got two $2 off coupons I'd like to use. Poor Big Delores looks worse than I've ever seen her. I've never had a molt this bad on a bird. I think because I usually feed "Egg Producer" with 21 % protein. I've been feeding a 16% feed of and on.

FYI Runnings has feed on sale $11.75. I just got three bags. Sold 12 dozen eggs today. Not as much as I'd like but at least I sold them.

good to know - I'm off to buy a couple of bags tomorrow - the little horrors are eating me out of house and home!!

Hello everyone. I'm new to the site. We are located in western N.Y. The farm is in Gasport. We have many chickens ,ducks, geese, pigeons, guinea fowl, turkeys, a couple peacocks and a few goats. I've only been to the Springville aution. However the one in Bath N.Y. will be on my to do list next spring. I've ordered a majority of my birds from many hatcheries and have bough-ten a few locally and at the auction.

Hi 'Neighbor' welcome to BYC, I'm fairly new to the site too, I'm South of Buffalo, about 50 mins away from you, but have friends who farm Shetland Sheep in Middleport, which I think is only about 10 miles from you.

Sounds like you have some great candidates for the calendar photo competitions currently on the site, there's one just for chickens, closing in a few days, and another for 'other' like ducks, geese, turkeys etc which I think closes in mid September.

I've gotten people saying both pullets, both cockerels, and one of each lol. I've never had silkies and I can't tell. The only difference between the two is one has a slightly bigger comb. They have the same size wattles and look almost identical. No eggs/crowing yet...

That's your best bet, when they crow or lay an egg! I have been fooled before so I wait till then. Yours are still young yet. Close to a year old is when you will know.

Beautiful sleeping weather last night. Of course I got yelled at for not letting them out till after 7. Spoiled brats. Have to be domestic before work today. Enjoy the day!

I am learning more about chicken breeds than I ever expected. One of my Black Copper Marans has carnation comb. I think.
I'm glad I'm not trying to breed show birds. I might consider a project in the future, but I don't know how those of you that breed SOP birds manage. Culling for color and comb and shape and form...
I'm keeping the chickens in the coop longer this morning. I have to go check on them again. I'm trying to get them to deal with being a flock together.

And my remission from Morehens Disease is over. I've relapsed into figuring when to hatch another batch. And trying to find Penedesenca hens or pullets.
Is there a cure for Morehens Disease? I have developed a sever case of it myself. I started with 8 chickens in a 5×8 coop with an 16×20 run . Now I'm converting my 25×25 barn to a coop for my 18 pullets and 2 cockerels. They need some more feathered friends though so I'm thinking maybe I should start looking for more littles after I move the big to the barn and have an empty coop/run.
