NY chicken lover!!!!

Afternoon all. Gee, I work for 6 days and you guys blow up the thread! lol Just finished all 9 pages!

We got rain last night and it was a whole lot more than what they said we would get. Dh went to bed at 10. Woke up at 230 to him yelling we are flooding. He ran out to hook up the hoses and start the trash pump to pump out the lake in the back yard while I ran downstairs and put blankets in front of the sliders to slow down the water. I pushed it out the door into the garage while he got the shop vac set up to start sucking up water. What a mess. I tried to carefully move the two bags of feed downstairs and the full bag just split when I picked it up. To make a long story short, by 430 am the back yard was pumped out and the downstairs was mostly sucked up. Went back to bed. Dehumidifier and fans are blowing downstairs and dh has most of the stuff move and mopped. I cleaned up the feed. I gave it to the cheeps and they think its just the greatest thing. I figure it is safe cause it just got wet and there are no chemicals or stuff on the cellar floor (its concrete). The reds have eaten all that I put out in batches around their run and I put a large trough feeder in their coop and filled that with the soaked food. I will keep and eye on it but hopefully they will eat it all before I have to ditch it. The silkies went crazy for the soft food. Have to check and see how much they ate. I would rather they eat it than have to ditch it cause it costs money. The swamp a half mile down the road is still over the road and running swiftly. I had to drive real slow to get through it as it was kinda deep. Hopefully it will go down over night.

Welcome to all the newbies! Nice to hear from new people and see their setups and chickens.

Gramms--I guarantee you will love those beans!

Rancher--happy belated anniversary!

Marquisella and Nutty---so nice to hear from you. I hope all is well!

Went to petsmart to get her highness food (aka abby the cat) and the spca was there. I wanted to bring all the animals home with me! There was a beautiful german shepard male there for adoption. As much as we would like a dog, it would not be fair to bring one into the house with me working fulltime now. Both of us work fulltime and so would not have enough time to give a dog the attention if deserves. I always consider the animal first. As it is, I spend extra time on days off with abbly and the cheeps to give them what they need. Now if only those elves would show up and clean the house!

Time to get busy again. Have a good evening!

I ordered Lav Orp eggs from a great breeder on here... They were not cheap... I have BEAUTIFUL looking chickens thanks to The Gary Farm! I did find a semi-local breeder in Letchworth, NY too... She was charging $15 a chick, unsexed of course. Not as good of looking stock as The Garry Farm!
You want Jody in PA. Hinkjc farms. The best.

Hi ladies,

It was a cold and wet one yesterday but we managed to get the frame up for the run. 6 by 8ft. We still need the braces and then we'll add the fencing. We're trying to figure out what to do for the roof. It's going to be covered with corrugated plastic but the way the roof is on the actual shed coop what concerns me is when water goes down it, it will seem into the side where the run is and eventual cause rotting on the wood quicker. I don't know, maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill at the moment. lol For this being the first time we've ever done anything like this let alone building a frame, I think it looks pretty good so far if I do say so myself. lol

I hope you all had a lovely weekend!
My first run was flat topped and I used tarps to keep the snow out. BUT it had to be cleaned off and that was not easy. One day I heard a crack and the run caved. THOUGH I had used 2x2's and they were not strong enough.

Next I redid the whole thing and made it slanted with 5' in the back 6' in the front. (I'm short)

Gradually I added corrugated metal and some clear plastic.

Because the plastic does not butt tightly to the coop I do get some snow and rain inside but not a lot. The roof of the run cuts through a window making it harder. I still need to figure out how to fix that though. I do have to rake snow off the runs though, but it's easier with the slanted roof.

Went out side to find 3 of the turkeys on the car!

I got them off and checked the car over.

There are a bunch of scratches on the hood.

We are trying to sell that car and the only reason that I have it home is cause my van is in the shop so I needed a car to run around with.

I'm going to have to wash it and see if I can buff some of the scratches out before he gets home on Wednesday.

Can't have them do that EVER again or they are going to find themselves in freezer camp a lot sooner then they thought.

I am sorry for your trouble. Wish there was something we could do.

Everyone: Talk of pets reminded me Pinkypie went to be fixed through the Cat Coalition but could not be done because she has some kind of respertory thing. DD has to give her pills. I'm not sure when she's going back to be done. I told DD that when they move out, soon I hope, the cat goes with them.
