NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi ladies,
plastic but the way the roof is on the actual shed coop what concerns me is when water goes down it, it will seem into the side where the run is and eventual cause rotting on the wood quicker
It looks very nice .
You could do
1) put a roof over the coop and run angling the roof on the run side
2) put the run on the front or back of the coop
3) put gutters on the coop roof so it runs off away from the run

Wow, I received some great input and I love the pics!

Gramma, I thought of adding a gutter but thought people would think I'm nuts! My husband thought of the run in front of the coop but while my neighbors are great with the idea, I don't want any of the towns-folk getting any idea's by looking at our coop. Our house is just outside the town and when I called the code enforcement literally 12 times, he ended with "I don't see anything in the book about not having chickens" and decided to go with it. Others inside the town said they asked and were told no! So I'm going with what the enforcement officer said after getting sick of my calls but I definitely don't want to get peoples feathers ruffled.

So I'm trying to be discrete with the location. If it's not directly to the left, we can keep the noise from the girls to the middle of our yard so they'll be less likely to annoy our neighbors who said they wouldn't mind. There's no room in the back because our chain link fence ends there. So hopefully the slanted roof with some tarps and maybe there will be extra gutters after we put some up on our house before winter sets in.

Goodness, I'm getting nervous that we won't get everything done in time for winter. My hope was to add gutters to the back of the house, replace the wood and stain the deck, sand the foundation and add new mortar, add concrete to the steps out front to fix a few spots, clean out the furnace, re seal the driveway since last winter completely picked up the end of the driveway and cracked it terribly. Finish the side yard with the rest of the flowers before they die, culk the windows for winter, clean up the garage, add more insulation under the floors, finish the schoolroom (we're homeschooling our daughter) and move our bedroom from the bottom to the top floor. Oh and get the tree limbs over the roof out before winter too.

The work is never done and there is never enough money to cover it. lol We just have to do the best we can with what the good Lord has given us.

All that talk of Lavender Orpingtons has me excited for spring to come! I'd like to add a couple of them and a couple of the red Orps. No more after that. I think we'll be done for a while.

Pharmchick, I'm sorry to hear about the flooding! What an ordeal you had. You both handled it very well. Prayers everything dries up soon.

Thank you Phoreda for your comment! I bet your coop looks beautiful. We won't be doing any breeding with ours. I would love to see pics sometime of your coop. Sounds like it's just wonderful!

Lisa, we have plenty of slugs but have seen a whole lot of toads too.

Rancher, Thank you for share your pic and input with me. I appreciate that!

Luv, uh boy! Those naughty turkeys!!!

I hope your husband doesn't notice the scratches.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Isnt the coop / run visible whether its in the front or side ?
The back of our coop just looks like fencing - my Sis

coops can be what you want ..everyone has different ideas / needs ...
we originally had a uncovered run ...tarped it.for one winter ...a big pain to keep the snow off
the next year we covered it all put a roof over the coop & run ..so much easier ...
No worries with all the snow we had last year

1st section on the left - part of run made into a baby coop later

Ha Ha I didnt get enough zucchini ..Squash bugs got it ... my chickens dont like squash bugs or slugs
Those big ones I split open & give the chickens ..they love the seeds
I noticed that when i put the big zucchini's on the mandolin and slice them up..they look like dognuts in minutes.....exactly what they do...eat the middle out of the zuccchini. LOL

@ HISIRISHGEM, Gramma has some great ideas on your coop issue. Water will be a huge issue for you. The last thing you want is a muddy wet nasty run for your babies. If you can't move the run to the back I would def look at integrating a roof on the run that attaches to the peak of the coop for adequate run off. They also sell clear panel plastic corrugated roofing material if you needed light to your run. Best of luck here. You are doing great!

(I had a coop placed in the natural run off in my driveway area...big mistake. That water would have caused huge problems if my coops weren't designed to be moved.)

Morning all! I had a pretty productive day yesterday with the girls and cleaned their coop and run top to bottom! My new chicks are out in a brooder in the coop, they are going on 3 weeks now and I have some heat for them at night. I have 2 buckeyes, a polish, lavender orp and a barnevelder. Not sure that I'll keep them all. I friend of mine ended up with a bunch of cockerels like so many of you! So, I may raise the buckeyes for her.

No word from my neighbor since the town said they can't be involved because there are no laws against having chickens. The town wrote us both a letter telling him that he must deal with me directly with any complaints. I'm so glad the animal control officer locally has 20 chickens himself and backed up everything I said!

Still no one interested in my little lavender orp roo. He is 10 weeks old and turning out to be a gorgeous guy. I've debated keeping him and breeding him with my other lavender orp, but a No Crow Rooster Collar would be involved. I've done research on it and people say it doesn't hurt them, but I just wonder how I rooster would feel not being able to let out a loud crow!

He absolutely loves his silkie mamas and I think they love him too lol! My silkies are laying and I so far have gotten an egg a day from them. They are about 5 months old.

On another note...I officially found out that I passed my nursing boards! Woohoo! I am working at a local hospital in maternity and labor and delivery!

Hope you all have a great day.

Be encouraged, nothing is ever really done. I've redone my runs, coops and inside the coops a few times. You just need to figure out what will work for you. Too things wear out.

Tarps are good sometimes but break down in the sun. I have to keep replacing mine on my hoops.

Ventilation needs to be tweaked to get it the way you want.

Runs need to be made bigger as chickentis takes hold and you increase your flock.

And so it goes,

Rancher
