NY chicken lover!!!!

Way to much for me.
Things must be tough for GF to be having sales on chicks. I'll admit I'm not buying from anyone anymore so I'm stuck with the breeds I have. I figure GF would be safe if wanting to add another breed. Though I've read that their stock isn't SOP anymore than anyone elses. Too, I don't believe anyone can guarantee SOP chicks. Genetics is a crap shoot.

Too chick starter feed has gone up in light of current events. I assume it's because the commercial farms will be needing tons of feed to restock their farms. So WE are paying a price too.

Anyhow I figured there might be two other people who could invest $100. Unsexed chicks would mean working together of course. It would mean all future eggs are shared between the three people. At least for the first couple of years. We'd all be hatching egg of course. I'd want a signed contract too.

I found a great article on Martin Silverudd's experiments.  If anyone is interesting at reading his study-  It's a tough read but interesting to see how he created his breeds.

Interesting article! Thanks for the link! I feel like I need to read it a couple more times before I will actually understand, lol. But what I caught is interesting. My plan for the 2016 breeding season is to keep a couple groups of hens & change out the cockerels midway thru. My plan was to give a 2-3 week break between matings so that I can be sure of progeny, but Silverudd's methods are very interesting to consider. Thanks again for the link!

Im in the trip-state area! Go NY!

). Right now I have 10 chickens- I just adopted 3 Ameraucana hens yesterday, and I have an Ameraucana rooster, 2 white leghorns, 2 RIR, and 2 barred rocks. I also have 6 ducks- 2 Indian runners, 2 khaki Campbell's, and 2 Cayuga. I didn't realize ducks were so skiddish! I'm hoping the new hens get acclimated soon- they were trying to hash things out this morning... They def don't like the rooster, that's for sure.
