NY chicken lover!!!!

Well it looks like I'll be keeping my lavender Orpington roo. Couldn't find him a home. I'm wondering about what age he may start harassing hens? He is about 14 weeks old. I have bantams mostly and 3, 6 week old chicks - lavender Orpington, barnevelder and polish.

So is there a point that I will need to separate the roo? I just don't know if he could hurt the smaller hens.

Eventually I'd like to breed him with my Orpington pullet - but I have no idea about how that will go.

Need expertise from you all!

Well if you have Lav hen you'll need him right? Now if you have more than one Lav orp roo and Lav hen you'll still want to hang on to him for a back up.

Point being when I lost my main Maran roo I just moved his son into the coop. I'll be setting eggs in hopes to hatch more for that coop.

More than one rooster can be run with a flock.

I have two C. Rock roosters AND Shorty a lavender Araucana in the coop. Too I had to keep moving my EE rooster back to his own coop as he kept wanting to spend the night with the C.Rocks.

I also have three Del roosters in one coop too.

He should start showing some interest about now ...probably with pullets his age ..Hens will more than likely shut him down for now They will probably all work it out
Size does not matter with pecking order ..my Teeny Sumatras got NO advances from the Teen Roos who are 3 times their size
Ive seen my roo who is 4 times the size of my Sumatras ...mate her with no problem ...she squatted so his full weight isnt on her ..I worried about him hurting her too .

Finding good homes for roosters is tough. He's lucky that he can stay. He will probably be fine in your flock. Just keep an eye on them. You will know when he's harassing the girls bc the ones that aren't ready for him will scream and run from him. The hens who are older than him, regardless of their size, will keep him at bay at least until he's proven his worth to them. Remember that sometimes cockerels will be a little extra spunky when they're first feeling their hormones kick in and then mellow out as they mature. I'd give him a chance to be a gentleman or a jerk and then decide from there. MHO. I'm sure he's gorgeous.

I was just reading some articles by Grant Brerenton. For pair matings, he suggests waiting for the hen to start laying and then putting the rooster in with her for only 20 minutes per day. Any more than that and he suggests she will be over-bred, losing her rump feathers & looking real ragged. I suppose a chicken saddle can help w this too tho.

Interesting reading here.
I'm hoping to get a batch of eggs in the incubator by the end of the week. Remember when I said I'd probably never incubate eggs again? Haha.
So, how is winterizing going for everyone? The nipple watering system leaves quite a bit of water on the shavings. The chickens are not very neat drinkers. So, what should I do? I'm open to suggestions. I haven't figured it out yet.
akaruby Lavender is one of my favorite chicken colors, so I'm glad you'll have a roo in your group. I hope it works out for you. My roos in training are only 9 weeks. A Wheaten Ameraucana and a Buff Laced Brahma. The other 6 cockerels will be sold or processed by the end of the year.

Hi everyone! It's been a while. I had around 900 new posts to read. Welcome to all the newbies. Sorry to hear of some of the losses and illnesses. Also some very interesting reads. My husband is back to work and doing well. I have 7 Roos left destined for freezer camp. No hens but I do have some Guinea keets I hatched. I wanted a few to control ticks but had a good hatch with many extras. They are royal purple and a few pearl greys if any one is interested. They are 6 weeks off lights and go into a coop at night. I have ordered wheaten ameraucana eggs from peachick and some orpingtons from ultimate orpingtons. I should also be getting bielefelders from GFF. I'm excited to be starting again. I can't believe how much I missed my chickens and how expensive eggs got.

Glad you are getting back to chickens. Good luck!

Went out this morning with my camera..My Swedish Flower Hen it just too funny! The minute I come out she is at my feet and acts like she wants to get picked up. She loves to sit on my arm. The kids said I should have named her "Parrot" instead of "Sasha". When I was waiting for the kids to get off the bus she must of heard me because she came running from around the house. Picked her up and she got on my arm..Then proceeded to climb her way up so that she was siting on my shoulder till the bus came. She sat there for at least 15 minutes or more... Silly Chicken!!

She has a crest as big as a polish! She's beautiful. I had a few shoulder chickens but unfortunately they have passed away. I'm hoping I get another one - they are so great.
