Welcome ! ...I dont remember if anyone has lavender hens ?

I could also use a black ameraucana rooster. I have three lavendar roos and two mottled hens from the eggs I purchased from Nor Cal. I want to cross my mottled hens out with a good sized, super healthy black Ameraucana rooster if I can find one to create a bunch mottled splits to breed later. I think I may keep one lavender roo and get some hatching eggs in the spring if I can't find any lavender hens.

I have a black-lavender split chick that is 2 weeks old. If it's a rooster and you're still looking we could plan something. It'll take another 8 weeks or so to figure out. I've chosen my roos for the next year or so so extras go to freezer camp or get sold. I'm keeping pullets until my flock fills out a bit.

         Hello!  I love Burdett!  The midwife I used for my daughter has her office there.  I was actually  just looking into the chicken feed source that I saw in Burdett.  I currently get all of my feed in Horseheads and would love a closer source if the price is reasonable.  Do you happen to know anything about them?  Also what are you raising?

I didn't know there was a chicken feed source in Burdett, so nope, don't know anything about them. :/ Was it something u found on CL? Definately worth looking in to. I get most of my feed from Ithaca bc that's where I work. I have mostly Spitzhaubens of various colors, a few blue bredas, and a handful of cemanis. I probably have too many birds, but tough to know which project to let go of. And they all seem to be projects or potential projects

Once I get my hatching eggs I'll have some marans, olive eggers and Easter eggers. I'm hoping to make it to Chickenstock this year! Here's my barnevelder - they're supposed to lay darker brown eggs...ill have to post a picture when she lays.

Also wanted to share a few pics of my polish...seriously the sweetest bird and has a funny personality.

@tao chick, I have decided to keep my blue silkie since he is calm and very friendly, also better chance of different colors when I breed them.
I have a question tho with the other cockerels...when i seperate them, can I put them in their own coop by themselves, or should I keep each one seperated, in the same coop. I think I have a plan which with entail my laying hens moving into the palace with my silkies and the silkie cockerels in the coop where the layers are.

Tao chick is right about keeping an eye on them. I started w 10 boys together & w/in the first 24 hours I pulled one that was being picked on. A couple days later, at night check I found another guy who had hopped out of the bachelor pen & snuck in w the girls and a couple days later another cockerel had done the same . At this point, 7 boys are living peacefully together. Clearly I need to cover the runs or use taller fences tho .

I use a trail cam for security when we are away for long periods of time. Also use it to scout deer where I hunt. You can get them as low as $25, mine cost $50 at WalMart. They work day and night with no light they have infrared flashes, though I would recommend the invisible black flash ones if used for security. Mine is a infra red no flash during day but night flash it is visible if you know where it is and look right at it, especially set to video cause it is on longer.Never have had anyone mess with our home but it makes me feel better knowing if something happens I might catch the culprite.

I set it up near the coop if I suspect predators lurking. Dogs were going nuts a few days in a row at night so I set it up, caught a big coyote about 25yrds behind the coop. Went out the next night when I heard the dogs start, fired a bottle rocket out into the field. Don't think the coyote ever came back Lol. Never did mess with the chickens.

We're probably going to grab one once we get the car up and running again. Thank you: I had no idea they were so affordable.

NO ONE should come in your yard to look at / learn about chickens without your permission .

Unfortunately, there was evidence on (and in) our hen that he's more than just a pervert. He's still feeding them - we found more pizza in the yard. Seems like the bike lock's helped, though. Either way, we're going to have a novel-sized police report on this sick ******* at this rate.

Will you be coming to the annual NY Chickenstock in spring? You'll have lots of opportunity to set up sales with people here and then pick up at chickenstock if you are. For color you can't go wrong with easter eggers - both they and the eggs they lay can be tons of different colors. Then you have olive eggers, an offshoot of EEs that lay eggs in shades of olive. There's also Welsummers for a nice terracotta colored egg and marans for a deep chocolate colored egg. And if you want a bird that's as black as black can be, I will probably have ayam cemani hatching eggs, cull chicks, and maybe even some breeder quality chicks depending on how my hatches go.
Hey Pyxis. In regards to the ayam cemani chicks you'll be culling - how much to take two duds off your hands when you start hatching?

So, we'll still be looking for a rooster to help the hens feel more secure. We've got a chickens-in-tree problem, and from what I hear (which could be wrong) roosters usually try to get everyone in before nightfall.Yes they do this ..

The person we're buying the australorps from may or may not come through.
Im in Jordan - have delivered chickens to Oswego before - not very far .
Have 2 roosters
1 - 5 months he is slightly tame EE mix $ 5.00.. he is shyer around people I would recommend him ..
as he is more likely to resent a intrusion into the coop

1 - 1 year 6 months he is tamer olive Egger mix ( Cuckoo maran mix $ 20.00 )



Roos dont need friends when added to a new flock ...they make their way to the top of the flock
