NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello NY! I have extra lavendar ameraucana roosters availlable if anyone local is interested. I purchased hatching eggs from nor cal chickens http://www.norcalchickens.com/. They are very pretty. I would love to trade for lavendar hens or a nice black standard ameraucana. I'm located in Odessa, NY. Hope you all have enjoyed this amazing weather!!!
Welcome ! ...I dont remember if anyone has lavender hens ?

Just the size and lack of fkexion of her joints tells me that she can't last much longer, still hiding her pain though. She had an awful time getting a hoof trim back in the spring. And she is actually 25, we've just owned her 13 years. Bought her a few months after the knee kick injury.
Thank you all for the kind words. Appointment still not set, trying to get a reasonable price backhoe.

Too True ... When I had to bury my Standarbred mare - very big girl and a sudden death - I called an excavating company (landscapers) so try them too ....

Meanwhile - all of you will feel better when lavishing carrots and love on her - and 25 - well wow !!!! You did a good job. I have a QuarterArab who is about that age .... he is certainly retired and only gets the occasional guest or kiddo on his back.

And sometimes he just gets to sniff at the guest after they've popped their knee out of socket while trying to get on him and are now laying in the pasture  He's a good boy. We really should go riding this coming spring sometime. And use the mounting block! Lol.

In other news, winterizing is going okay here. Still got some things I need to do, but overall it's coming along. I can't find my aquarium heater so I'm going to have to order a new one. I really don't want to keep the big five gallon waterer in the coop this year what with there being ducks in there now, so I'm hoping I can find a way for it to stay unfrozen out in the run without having the buy one of those expensive heated bases to set it on. Perhaps if I wrap it in something insulating it'll be okay. Or I'll just have to buy and switch to one of the heated three gallon buckets I use with the other coop.

I have been thinking obsessively about chicks for the spring... my problem is I'm technically only allowed 5 (already have 4). I'm thinking I can get away with 7

I'm leaning toward Delawares or Ameraucana... but there are so so many I'd love to try. Ugh!

Yeah, in Walton. 100 yr old place. Almost got the axe this week. Multi billion$ company that owns us was merged/bought by another bigger multi billion$ company. They were closing three places in NY. The state, well taxpayers anyway, threw them a bone to keep ours open, also keeping another open in Avon. Doesn't seem right but I guess it's good many didn't lose jobs.
They already cut a couple thousand jobs nationwide, and are still closing seven more plants.

I heard kraft was selling/closing some plants and that they're expanding the lowville plant. My brother in law works at lowville. Hood has done the same sort of thing but so far the Vernon plant is still running. Who knows what the future will bring? Some times I really dislike big business.

Hello neighbor! I have the too-many-roos syndrome as well, but wanted to say hello bc we're so close our roosters probably crow to each other, I'm in Burdett :). Norcalchickens look like gorgeous birds. Hope u find the trade ur looking for!

I wish I knew that before I had the hubs build a roost towards the bottom of the coop for them. Lol. My "training period" was short lived. No wonder they were heckling me every night.

This is one of my handsome cockerel Casper. He was the first one to crow at 2mos. My son called me at work and said one of your chickens is making a funny noise. I think it crowing.I rushed home thinking it was sick or something. He was too young to crow, so I thought. He seemed fine to me, no funny noises, nothing....till the next morning. He crowed (if that's what you want to call it). Scared the crap out of us, since he was still in his brooder, which intensified his "crow". It didn't take very long for his twin, also named casper, started crowing with him. They were outside shortly after that. Now they are professional crowers, loud, loud loud.
So, if anyone is interested in these handsome fellows, let me know.

No worries on lingo. Rehoming is tough. I use Craigslist, but this time of year seems to be filled with extra roosters. I have had many listed and sold one. He was pretty special, in that he was docile and yet protective. His new owners still send pictures. He also was loud, but settling down quickly. I think that's part of what you're experiencing. At 6 months old they seem to be establishing order and knowing their hormones. The concern I would have with that many is that eventually they will use the hens to establish dominance and that can be very damaging traumatic to the hens.
So, separate quarters are important to protect your hens. 1 rooster per 8 hens is usually a good number but others will offer more perspective. The rooster I sold was the most laid back of all my roos. That's why he stuck around so long. The next roos I'm choosing from are the same way. I have a very mellow roo who will stay and a very pretty roo that will stay to watch over my flock of 20. I'm also picking up a breeding pair this weekend that will live in separate quarters.
@tao chick, I have decided to keep my blue silkie since he is calm and very friendly, also better chance of different colors when I breed them.
I have a question tho with the other cockerels...when i seperate them, can I put them in their own coop by themselves, or should I keep each one seperated, in the same coop. I think I have a plan which with entail my laying hens moving into the palace with my silkies and the silkie cockerels in the coop where the layers are.

I have 5 of my 3.5 month old cockerels in a coop by themselves. Because they don't have ladies to fight over they are fine. The crowing contests are just starting now. As long as there's space, you can keep your cockerels together in a coop with no hens around. I don't have a lot of experience in this, but it works for me. If you have a meek cockerel and not enough space, it will get picked on, so keep an eye on them.

Hello! I love Burdett! The midwife I used for my daughter has her office there. I was actually just looking into the chicken feed source that I saw in Burdett. I currently get all of my feed in Horseheads and would love a closer source if the price is reasonable. Do you happen to know anything about them? Also what are you raising?
