Rancher........ The only problem I have with the heated water bowls is : the Roos wattles get dipped when they drink and they get frostbite. I haven't figured out how to prevent their wattles from getting wet

I've had that happen too with rooster's wattles, figured there wasn't much I could do about it.
Most recovered just fine & only seemed bothered if they got swollen.

That's the hard part as they can't tell us.
I'm glad some of my roosters don't have large wattles b/c of this, but it's not a common trait.

On another subject, I decided that since no one wants ducks locally, I'll have to process some young females this year, not just the drakes. The young females aren't as good mothers & I already have enough females to keep me overpopulated with ducklings in the spring! It's supposed to be 48* & rain today, but I have a covered area to work in & a 2nd pair of hands to help.
Hopefully the ducks will lay sooner next year do their offspring are ready before this late!

Morning all. Another damp day today. Have to clean out the one silkie coop. Threw some boss in the big coop so the girls can do their own housekkeping. Two eggs yesterday from 19 hens. Still molting. Have to hit everyone with ivermectin soon. My twice a year thing.

The Duke got frostbite on his waddle and tips of his comb last year. I used egg whites on them and it healed up well. I will be more diligent this year on checking combs, waddle and feet. My coops stay pretty dry.

My sentiments exactly, the whole time we have lived here, had no problems and no issues of losing our flock to any predators.. Then we have new neighbors that moved in down the road to the east of us and sure as crap lost half my laying flock to their husky... I kept wondering why my chikens were dwindling and then one morning our dogs were barking mad..looked out the window and sure enough there were two huskys chasing after them and one had a hen in its mouth.One of the dogs even tried to kill our cat.. The owner kept apologixing and did acknowledge that he had noticed his dogs with blood on their faces after being let out.. as of late.. Now he knew why.. We live about 1/4 mile up the road.. He offered to pay for chicks, but of course for us it was too late in the season for us to be dealing with that.. we said keep your dog contained and we wont have to be unfriendly about it..

It did put a dent in our egg sales, as we have regular ..consistant buyers... but again I agree ..Warn said offender of the issue... next its all open range as far as I am concerned.

For those of you who remembered me posting about the loss I had been suffering on the old farm. A roo disappear here, etc...then up to maybe 20...before finally catching the neighbors dog with my favorite rare roo in it's mouth. Asked them twice to keep dog contained...(No lease law in my Town). Then my other neighbor sees the dog killing my other rare blue isbar. I called the Troopers. (This was a four month process and included a trial)

Since the litigation is over and it is now public record here is the long story short... In NYS there is a dangerous dog ordinance. There is also a state ordinance to keep dogs to their own property even if the Town/Village does not have an ordinance. You need to prove your case and document it. Video, pictures, notes etc...it is a civil/criminal case. The owner can be arrested.

If the Judge finds that the dog is a dangerous dog he can be deemed a dangerous dog. The Judge can call for his termination/Euthanize, fine the owner (Up to $1500-I think), Determine that he needs to be insured ($100,000.00 liability), Neutered, Muzzled in public and on a leash, always confined...can never run at large. If it is running at large it will be put down immediately. Restitution for the animals. There were also a few others that the Judge can require but I can not remember all of them.

I absolutely hated to have to go this route. But, my beautiful animals I had raised from an egg or a day old deserved to have a life. The boys did what they were supposed to. They deflected the threat away from the flock...and lost their beautiful lives.

Purpletie, thank you for telling about your ordeal. How difficult to have to go through all that, in addition to the loss of your flock. Even with restitution, it doesn't give back your bonds and time, and those unique individuals. So sad, but my hat is off to you for seeing it through.

Sorry Purpletie I went through almost the same thing with a neighbor who refused to keep his dog locked up, even though we do have a town ordinance saying dogs can't leave their owner's property. I talked to them multiple times and just kept getting empty promises. My other chicken owning neighbor even told them flat out they were going to shoot the dog if they saw it again, but they still let it roam. I was gearing up to take them on over it and had pictures of the dog killing my birds, etc, but then they moved. Still, the blatant disregard for the fact that they were spoken to multiple times by multiple people and were even told the dog was going to be shot and they still let it roam and kill our birds just floors me. I don't know what they were thinking - that there was nothing we could do about it? That shooting it was an empty threat? Did they just not care about the dog at all? Either way, good for the dog that they moved, because I was on a war path after it attacked Lacie, my goose.

As a bonus, after they moved, they abandoned their intact tom cat who then came over to our place looking for food and got into a fight with our male cat that led to him ultimately losing his leg. Just great people all around.
