NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a question for everyone here - are you NPIP? if so, what are the benefits? what's the downside?
I have heard that it's quite restrictive in that you can only buy from other NPIP people. Thoughts & comments please - I need guidance!

I hope they weren't expensive boots. Around here I need waterproof boots.  Seems to me chickens will dust no matter if there are cooties or not.  I say anything that might prevent them or at least keep them in check is worth the effort, right?

60*  on Sunday?  :weee    I'm getting ready to clean a coop or two. Plus the brooder since I got rid of five of the chicks.  They were quite messy.  I now only have two. An EE and a Marans that I'm pretty sure is a roo.

Have someone interested in the C. Rocks. I always get nervous doing business. I never hear back from folks that have bought chicks, chickens.  One person says they have experience with exhibition.  I have no doubt this line will show well. The hens I think are nice but since I don't show who am I to say. Too, they know who Scott is and I know his birds have won ribbons. I'm too old and poor to get into the show circuit.

I too have been feeding Feather Fixer?  It's high in protein but I wonder how much better it is than the Egg Producer I've switched back to.  FF is only 18% but the EP is 21%.  Aww anyhow it is what it is. It's what we like that matters I guess.

Oh and Pharm, don't criticize slinging pills. We here depend a great deal on our Pharmacist.  Though I swear one more pill assigned and I'll scream.  I will ask you this. Are there any side effects to Fish Oil pills ?

Of course for the chickens I like to add Cod Liver oil but finding it liquid is not easy. I'm down to the last of it from long ago. The pills are for me. I try to get the chickens to take them but they have a hard time swallowing :sick  pills.  :lau

Have a nice day everyone,

Rancher, it's still to cold outside for me, Hicks
not feather fixer , fermented feed. I use blue seal all flock grower.

Today officially sucked. We have literally been up to our rears in horse poo fixing fencing. The neighbors blasted stallion escaped again. This time tearing down 100 ft of fence. He wasn't hurt just very angry he got put in the barn. We on the other hand are sore. NY ground is horrible for drilling in fence posts.

I'm not, but I might have to do it in the Spring even though I think it's really stupid in NY. I looked into it because technically to ship hatching eggs you are supposed to be NPIP, and you definitely are if you're shipping live birds.

However, it's a joke in this state. Thankfully it costs nothing to do, but they don't test for anything useful - just one strain of salmonella that I already know my birds don't have because if they did with the amount I handle them I'd be sick already. They don't test for anything useful like mycoplasma, coryza, not even the avian flu. Just one strain of salmonella.

And they don't test waterfowl - at all. Waterfowl, the biggest vector of disease, are just not tested. I was told this when I inquired about it. If you have chickens and if they test clean, they assume that the waterfowl are clean too. I would assume if your whole flock is waterfowl they'd test, but maybe they wouldn't and you'd just be ineligible for NPIP.

Plus you are now restricted from getting any birds or eggs from anyone else that isn't NPIP. If they find out you did, you lose your certification. Although really, no one is checking. If you buy from someone who is NPIP they could have broken the rules, rendering all the testing that was done on their flock null, and no one is checking and there's no way for you to know.

Plus, the whole reason that this program exists, so that people can't sell birds and hatching eggs that might not be disease free and aren't supposed to ship them, isn't even enforced. Never once has anyone at the PO questioned me on shipping eggs. I don't think they even know the program exists.

Sorry it was a bad day. Why isn't the neighbor doing the repairs if his/her horse took down the fence? Just curious.
They are super sweet past their prime and need help. The fencing was on their property, as we have no fencing. We started helping them out over a year ago by just cleaning stalls and minor upkeep. Now we tend horses property house and all. Its not bad until one horse or another gets a burr up it rear in cold weather.

That's so very kind-hearted. Sounds like your a very giving spirit.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. Well, I'll continue using most of it for our gardening as it helped with the bad bugs and I'll continue to use a little in their dust bath. We already added peet moss , wood ash and sand in their run. I'm guessing I should probably have one inside the coop before the snow comes?

We've been doing the Fermented Feed, we just added the black sunflower seeds and letting them out to free range. They are over the moon that there is no snow on the ground so they can work through the ground. Snow White flew out of the fence. I knew she'd be the first one. She's been quite the Diva and I'm thinking she and one of the other EE's will end up with a trimmed wing to keep them from going beyond. They are all tempted to fly past the fence into the woods and if they do, they're on their own.

Have a great night everyone!

NY Ground?

Are there places that will just set posts for you? OR just drill the holes.
