Introducing myself
We live in Garrison New York on the east side of the Hudson Valley. I have had chickens off and on since I was 12 and saved all the money I could for a $36 money order for an assorted batch of Murray McMurray assorted bantams. Now I'm a mom and the hub got me a fancy Brinsea incubator after I successfully hatched some ducks and chicks in my 20+ year old hova-bator.
Currently I have no chickens but I do have some silkies and silver appenzeller spitzhauben eggs going on day 5 today incubation!

Welcome to the thread! Congrats on the incubator and the eggs! I hope you have a good hatch Nice breed choices too. I have silkies, as do several other members in here, and spitzhaubens are on my wishlist. Phoredaburds in here actually breeds those so she might be able to help you if you have any questions about the breed.

Finally found some decent screws after digging around in my hardware cupboard for half an hour - not my decking screws, those are truly gone apparently, but they'll work. Now I'm off to finish the nesting boxes. Hopefully my POL pullets will make use of them if they finally start laying! Also gonna see if I can get the roost I took down yesterday relocated so the birds will actually use it.

I'm also excited because BYC chose me for the newest member interview! They just put it up in the Family Life section. I'm really honored that they chose me for an interview.

I hear you with the screws - my other half has the urge to 'tidy up' the barn every so often....can't find stuff for weeks after!

At only six going on seven months old these giants are getting huge! Someone laid a egg again today, guessing sussex. Going to have to spend the weekend building nest boxes onto small coop and get rid of all xtra cockerels and separate the two breeds in anticipation for some hatching in a few months.

Three days in the incubator, my hens been sitting on her lone egg for six days now. The second coops finished and now I'm sick from working outside in the rain for the past two days. I absolutely adore the turkey who kept a watchful eye on my every move and filled the time I spent outside with adorable turkey noises.

Is there a outside light on that they can see ? My neighbor had a outside light on the front of his house that shined into the coop at night .
They would crow at night when that was on ..
I asked him could he please turn of the light ? it was waking my roosters up ...LOL

Oh Gramma, I do have one neighbor who has those giant lights that turn on at dusk off at dawn...but he's a ways away. My husband says it looks like a prison with all the lights...maybe...I'll go in the coop and see how much light is coming in..

I have a spot light and if I go out for a walk it comes on and the roosters start to crow. 3 or 4 am is not good for the neighbors.

Devona, I'm excited for you! $20 is a common price for laying hens that are under 2 years old, I think. Being in the city will make getting feed expensive and you might benefit from making your own. It's not cost effective for me when local feed is inexpensive, but you might be able to make it for less than buying it. Look for recipes online. I'd definitely stick with starter/grower for now.

So I can get that much for Delaware pullets that are near laying?

Wow, lot's of posts.
I hear you on the nest box build Pyxis. Our 3yr old boy likes to play with my tools, hard keeping track of him and tools. Couldn't find my good tape measure when I moved coop and run. Though it would work out perfect, leave the upper stakes, move lower stakes 14' above, pull the fence over without removing bird netting....Easier said than done, getting it square so the netting covered good was a pain, and I found the tape measure in 12yr old's bedroom two weeks later.
I have to get my butt in gear building nest boxes on the small coop, I didn't think they would start laying yet, found a egg in that coop this morning.

Where are you from me? I've got some "bucket" nest boxes you can have free. Gotta couple tape measures too.
