NY chicken lover!!!!

I put a metal dish of water inside the heated dog dish an hour and a half ago, and it's already frozen solid. Not that the chickens have even come out of the coop yet! Would putting the water directly into the heated bowl make a difference? I was thinking that the metal dish would conduct the heat well...

Thanks for the tip! I'm planning a giant garden and love that this company targets our local area.

Pyxis, I'll be thinking of you and your kitty today. I still question how the end of my dog's life could have been better if I'd only ___. It's natural to do, I think. I hope you find that your decision to bring him home really was the right choice. Hugs to you.

Rancher I hope you and your wife make it through this rough health patch and are both feeling stronger soon.

Devona and Ladyloveall, I was worried about my chickens last night so I had everything set up so they can stay in there all day today. It was warm enough to keep the water thawed last night with 15 chickens. They all want out now, but I don't want the coop to get as cold as the outside temp today. There's already two open windows and a lot of other ventilation. We'll see if I change my mind. I have a water system with a heat tape on it in the coop. The heat tape trips on when temp falls below 35 and off at 45. On the other side of the coop i have a separate low water dish that isn't heated and only a thin layer of ice formed over night. This is all in a 15' x 15' space with 7' ceilings.

All that was meant to explain that your chickens will probably be fine without heat, but I also want to say that I completely understand your decision or considering heating or bringing them in. I think if you're careful about not shocking them with too much heat or sudden temp changes you'll be fine.

Maybe the metal is conducting the cold from the outside air better than from the bowl.

Things are not looking good for my kitty

I had to take him to the vet Saturday because he just wasn't looking good. They gave him fluids and decided there must be some other underlying problem so they put him on antibiotics too. He stayed about the same yesterday but today while I was at work he apparently went downhill, threw up three times, and wasn't even able to get himself to the litter box. My parents didn't take him to the emergency vet because they didn't think there was much that could be done. I'm taking him to the regular vet tomorrow but I'm not really sure there's anything to do at this point. Right now he's still alive but not very responsive. I'm feeling a bit guilty because the vet offered to keep him Saturday but I thought he'd be more comfortable at home. He might have done better there. At this point I'm really not sure if he'll be alive in the morning.

My other two cats seem to be pretty aware of what's going on. My youngest, who was a feral kitten that got trapped in my workshop and then we kept and whom my sick kitty took under his wing, is watching over him. She's sleeping in the kitchen on a bench overlooking where he is sleeping on his heating pad instead of sleeping in the living room as she usually does. My other cat, who is actually the oldest, seems to know I am upset and is following me around the house wherever I go keeping me company.

So sorry Pyxis. I completely understand the second guessing of making that hard decision.

My older kitty developed hyperthyroidism this summer, went from overly plump to skinny. Finishing up his first bottle of meds now, he seems to be improving.

I think someone here used sand to fill the empty space between the heated dish and the water bowl? The metal dish would be easier to remove and clean for sure, but may need to just put the water directly in the heated dish. I have a 1.5 gallon heated bucket that I set next to a small step for the chickens. Works great, but does get grimy.

So first off, thoughts and prayers to all of you. I am so sorry for your kitty @Pyxis. I pray you and your animals all do better soo.

Second, I'm sitting at my son's endocrinology appointment and from the other side of the room I hear a rooster ring tone. Ha so I'm not the only one. 945 in the morning over an hour I've been away from home and I'm still hearing birds, my husband thinks they are following me.

All my chickens, both coops are outside in their runs right now 10 degrees enjoying the sun, even the silkies. They've been going in and out, guess they don't want to scratch around in the snow much today for some reason Lol! Hopefully we don't get any heavy wet snow this winter, I'm hoping I don''t have to take down the bird netting on the big run, other run has chicken wire and doesn't sag. So far nothing has stuck to the bird netting.
