NY chicken lover!!!!

My water bowl is on some tiles left over from a project. What I would like to do is have a larger pan, like one of those black rubber things and put a rigid but durable and porous thing on top, then put the bowl on that, so any spills could drain into the pan. Then wetness would be contained. I saw this idea in a book. Maybe there could be cinder blocks holding up the edges of the flow through surface so the chickens couldn't flip the whole thing.

Since winter has finally arrived, I'm going to try a water dish inserted into an old tire, stuffed with straw and see how that works.

Oh, another question... I have a water jug that I can not return for the deposit. I want to figure out a way to make it my flocks water source outside. I want to use the water nipples. Had anyone successfully converted one if these large jugs this way? We're taking the water cooler rectangular kind.
have you got a picture?

Generally my black tubs don't freeze too often if I've got them out of the wind. Though I do use a rubber mallet to break the ice out and add hot water. It seems to last all day if they birds drink.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for my kitty. He made it to this morning and I got him to the vet. Unfortunately he was having wild blood sugar swings and his diabetes just wasn't going to be manageable. By the time he got in to the vet he was almost in a coma. We opted to have him put to sleep.

I'm sorry for your loss. It was best though. Now he will no longer suffer.

Pyxis, I am so sorry to hear about your sick cat. I really hope he gets well soon.
