NY chicken lover!!!!

Went in to the local hardware store today to get a key made, and they have their chick order forms out (they come in early April)! AHHHHH!!!
While chatting with the employee (he's not the first person to say this to me), he said, "Tully doesn't have chicken police, don't worry too much about getting in trouble for having over five. Just don't get a rooster!" I do plan to get a couple more come spring. One of my current four is sort of a dud- she stops laying for weeks at any tiny stress or change.

Does anyone care to share their opinions of Light Brahmas, Silver Laced Wyandotte and Ameraucaunas? I'm leaning toward Wyandottes. I'm looking for egg production and a docile personality. They live in a pen, and on rare occasions I will bring them into the yard for an hour or so under my watch. I love the idea of the colored eggs, but it seems like Ameraucaunas might be on the flightier side? My plan is to add three, so I'll need to find someone to split an order with, but it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a Buff-Laced Brahma and two Ameraucanas. They're all the most docile friendly tolerant birds. Unfortunately, they're all boys so I won't be keeping all of them and I can't tell you how the hens behavior is.

yes get five of each.

I had 3 SLW, and they are beautiful. Got them from JJ Feeds, they were not the pure, show type as each had a different comb. I liked them though. One got killed by a winged predator, Eunice just died recently, and Flavia is still going strong. They were beautiful and I know Eunice laid almost every day because she chose to lay her egg in her own nest next to the basement door. They were chatty and friendly, always hanging out near me when I was outside. They did not take any nonsense from the other hens.

any good gardening resources for the region? in the PNW we have Uprising Seeds - heirloom varieties cultivated in WA, OR and ID. there are also many books and guides to growing in the unique maritime climate of western WA. are there similar books and seed resources for central NY? might as well start studying!

Brahma's are pretty cool birds but from everything I've heard egg production is on the not very good side. The feathered feet can cause some problems also in cold weather if they get covered with snow, mud, ice.

Edited to add, and they eat a LOT, and grow slow.
These giants I have are similar, slow growth and eat a lot, but egg production is supposed to be good.

It's the new common cores math. You know where they tell the kids to explain their thought process?

5 chicks +5 chicks +5 chicks = 3 chicks.

Most folks only "have room for three, RIGHT NOW. Cuz sooner or later we add another coop and another and another.
