I'm glad I asked! I haven't decided yet what my next breed will be, but I agree I'll look for some local breeders when I have decided.

Right now I'm looking into speckled Sussex and welsummers. I need more calm, quiet birds that are brown or white egg layers.

Whitmore farm I heard was good but they are in Maryland. They have welsummers, but I have no personal experience with them.

Cortland countrymax also switched layer. $0.50 more.

$12.60 for Egg Producer. Plus I had two $2 off coupons. Though normally I buy the Egg producer for the protein. (I before C my foot!)

I wish I had nice things to say about The Poultry Hatchery aka AJ Domani and I truly hope they've improved their ways. However, my experience w them included hidden fees, misrepresented chicks, not having my preordered chicks, more hidden fees, and rude customer service. It's worth your efforts to track down good breeders or backyard hobbyists who have the breeds you are looking for. So many good chicken people out there. Hope u find what ur looking for!

IF i were to order chicks I'd still go with Ideal. Though I think there is a minimum. Too you could always wait for TSC they're the earliest I've seen with chicks, but you are limited. You might contact who ever they get chicks from and see if they'd send your order through TSC. Or contact TSC.

Morning all. Wind blew like crazy all day yesterday but not 1 flake of snow. This is a weird winter. No snow on the ground. Chickens are loving it though. Let the silkies out to play this morning since the wind has died. Otherwise they would have been blown into the next state!

Big coop is starting to pick up laying again. Most of the girls are looking respectable again after going through a hard molt. I've been giving them poultry cell in their water as well as boss and meal worms to help them out. Feathers are beautiful so it must be working.

Still trying to find a breeder to get some barred rocks from. Put a request on the rock forum but no response yet.

I'm thinking my neighbors would not be thrilled to see me marking my yard. They already see me in my nightgown and rubber boots in the am. The cold has forced me to put on pants and a jacket and I think they are thankful for that. If I time it right, the kids on the school bus get to see me as well. Nothing like scaring the crap out of everyone first thing in the morning! The screams of "not that"makes it worthwhile.

There is a breeder in Pompey, south of Syracuse. Her Sussex line has tapered out, but has Welsumers. I've hatched and have one hen of each. Great free Rangers. I've hatched the Welsumers eggs crossed with my GLW roo, great foragers and layers.
I did find someone on Facebook in the Albany area that has BBS and Lav Orps and also Speckled Sussex. She is a member here but doesn't check in. I want to get some of her hatching eggs this spring.
I haven't found a white layer yet that is calm, quiet or will lay through the year.

I also got Welsummer eggs from Deb in Pompey. 4 hatched out of 6, 1 boy 3 girls. I kept one and my friend is raising the other three. If she and I hatch some pure Welsummers this spring I'll let you know.

Have you looked at Natureberry farm?  They care about their birds, have good selection and are pleasant to deal with...

Yes! They are a few hours away from me, but maybe I could make a weekend trip up there with the DH. They do look so nice!

I'd be tempted to order chicks this year just to save myself the hassle of rehoming a zillion roosters,but I work during all the times they'd be delivered. So I'll be hatchin' again this year. TSC always has chicks when it's below freezing and ends the sales right when it might be warm enough to start them outside. (I am NOT doing inside chicks anymore if I can help it)..

I found poor Shorty dead this morning in the run. I think he might have died yesterday since he would have gone in last night. I did quarantine him a while ago but when he seemed okay I put him back in the coop. He was just laying there on his back with his legs in the air. This cold weather is getting to be to much.

We found one of our new SMALL Silkie dead in the run. Probably too cold for her.
She was tiny and born in June this year. DARN. Regards, Aria

I haven't been around much in the past few days because it's been a little hectic here. My family bought a house in town across the VT border so I'll be moving. If the house had had at least an acre of land I could have taken 25 birds with me. Sadly, it's only on a quarter acre so no poultry allowed. So now I have to figure out what to do. My grandmother, who lives five minutes down the road from the house we bought is allowed to have anything she wants, and I'm hoping she'll allow me to keep my birds there. If not, I'll be making a big move - me and all my birds will be going to live with Metella. Still trying to get everything figured out so we'll see what happens. I know that one way or another I won't be giving up my birds.

In other news some of my birds are missing. Mostly roosters - my NN rooster Bowtie has vanished along with my NN frizzle OE pullet. My cochin cockerel, who was shaping up to be gorgeous, is also gone. I'm not sure if something got them or they wandered off and died in the cold, but there is no sign of them.
