NY chicken lover!!!!

A little bit of good news...my little barred blue egg layer chick is alive! I looked all over the house because I only found one dead chick, figured maybe a dog ate the other. Well tonight I heard some loud chirping and it was her! Amazing she was able to hide behind some boxes in the basement

she sounds like a keeper! good instincts and fast reflexes!

To early with them to tell, just starting with them. Last July I got the chicks. Both are very calm breeds. Both color varieties are not common. I've only found two places that have red sussex. Speckled everyone has and quite a few have light. Giants grow slow and eat a lot they say, but they're my definite keepers.
I really like the sussex but at the moment I'm thinking I maybe might sell them in the spring and get some Naked Necks. Haven't decided if I want to work with three breeds yet.
Have you posted pics of the Reds. I have a light sussex hen and she's been very good. She does go broody easily though.

I do that for winter too rancher. I turn over the bedding all the time, but i cant get to the dropping boards during winter. So I use the other method. The coops are warm. I also take out my water at night and open windows during the day. So far onmy two cases of frostbite.

Thanks all for the well wishes! Still never did find the roosters but haven't lost any more birds so that's good.

@featherz I'll still have frizzle eggs, just not NN frizzle if you still want them :)

So it turns out that you can keep chickens in town, according to the real estate agent she asked the person who is in charge of that and he pretty much said they're not crazy about it but as long as there's no complaints they let it go. So I've ordered a no crow collar to slap on one of my cemani roosters and that flock will come with me to the new house. Still trying to figure out something for the rest of the birds - I'm asking my grandmother today if I can keep them at her place so everyone wish me luck!

good luck!

Good luck, Pyxis.
Devona, I hope your son doesn't have the flu-not-flu virus that's been going around. Doctor told us it mimics Mono and it lasts a long time...There are no kids in my household, but its been kicking the stuffing out of two grown ups. Hope he feels better soon ~ I'm always amazed at the stuff kids bounce back from that just lays adults out. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?!

Pyxis - I'm going to try the no crow collar as well so I can begin breeding. Let me know how it goes for you!

I finally decided on a breed that I'm going with - Marraduna Basque also called Euskal Oiloa. I believe they're called basque for short. They're a rare Heritage dual purpose breed. They have all the traits I'm looking for friendly, non broody, good foragers and lay big brown eggs. Placing my order with Sandhill preservation tomorrow along with some blue copper marans, Buckeyes, black ameraucanas and dorkings. Oh chicken math!
