NY chicken lover!!!!

Who here has ordered from Etsy? I'm considering ordering seeds but wondered about ordering seeds from multiple people. I don't want to have 10 purchases for 1 pack of seed each and pay postage for each package. If I can't put out ONE order I'll limit my purchase to just a couple of vendors. Except that it will mean only two packs of seeds.

None of the catalogs I get has EVERY color of foxglove. (yes I know they're poisonous but I'll be keeping the chickens away)

I've ordered from Etsy plenty of times. I've gotten house plants, jewelry and other gifts.

@rancher hicks have you looked at Michigan Bulb?
They have mixed colors and a cool white one with purple throat

Wow foxgloves are $. That catalog has a excellent selection of tulips, daffodils, lilys, etc in bulk.
I've got purplish blue foxgloves growing on the backside of my garage, reseed themselves every yr. I think I might save some seeds this yr and get a larger group of them going. Saved seeds a couple yrs ago, easy seeds to save, but forgot about them...

I'm so sorry. There are two the I am getting close to. I can't imagine how I'll feel when my it's my favorites time. May I ask what the bloated tummy means?
I don't know what causes it, but their belly swells up and is very soft. I brought them in the house and gave them warm baths to sit in at least once a day and after a few days the swelling goes down. At first I thought that they were egg bound, but that wasn't it. Not sure what it was and didn't want to try to drain it.
I'm sorry to hear about your Red, luvmychicks. Was she a red star? She looks similar to the two red stars I bought recently. Or were they red sex links? Now I don't remember!

For some reason, the two are tangled together in my brain. Is three years the average life span of those types of chickens like Red? I ask that question because you said you lost the others also, the same way. Again, I'm really sorry.
They all are pretty much the same..They were labeled Red Sexlinks when I bought them. I originally had 7. I gave 3 to a friend that wanted to start a small flock of friendly hens. And that left me with 3. I lost Buffy the same way as Red. Scarlet started out with the same bloated issues so I knew her time was limited, but she ended up having sour crop that I didn't catch in time.

@HISIRISHGEM careful with the 'chicken math'. When we decided to get chickens again a couple yrs ago we figured six layers would be plenty cause we don't want to sell eggs. I don't know how many we have now, plan on hatching many white giant's for meat, and adding a couple more breeds. .. Got thirteen eggs yesterday. ..

Edited to add I was going to comment on TSC coop. Seem alright but I wonder how long they will last? I prefer a big coop myself.
If you can't build your own do you have any of them Amish barn people, building, shed, garage, etc. near you? I saw they have coops and chicken tractors. I haven't looked them over but I bet they are heavier duty than the TSC ones.
Edited again, I did look one over they had on display at the Delaware county fair, was a larger one and very well built, heavy duty. Price was high but look at just the cost of materials, plywood etc is $$.
we bought a 6x8 shed from an amish family on rte 3 in pulaski. They added nesting boxes, pop door, roost for my chickens and a metal roof. no plywood at all, all solid pine heavy duty and paid $500 at the time. I am very pleased with my coop. we did add some more ventilation as a precaution and in the spring i will put a baby gate on the door to keep my silkies in during the rainy season. You can arrange for delivery through a towing company that they use, or depending on the size of your coop you could use a large utility trailer like we did.

Yesterday was the day of the Rooster Wars. Nice warm day, snow receding. I foolishly let everyone free range, including Earl and Mama who had been in sick bay. Junior had taken it into his head that he was in charge, and an epic fight ensued. Junior won. Earl was hiding in the coop. So Rascal, the strategist, decided it was the perfect time to challenge Junior. I was peeved with the whole lot of them so I plucked Rascal up and stuck him in a crate for the foreseeable future. This morning Junior made it clear there was no place in the coop for Earl. So he is back in sick bay having survived a bath and a lot of bluekote. None on me, he was too depressed to shake it off. Mama is with him, because while she is much better, she does not seem strong enough to endure the pecking order.
Note to self, it is better to treat the head rooster in the coop if at all possible. Now I need to create a retirement coop, and a bachelor coop.

Oh dear, while you made the scenario quite funny, I'm betting it was quite the headache. Poor Earl! I love my "mama" so I'd imagine your keeping them comfortable and they're getting a whole lot of love. Naughty Rascal and Junior. lol

So the center pic is the duck hut - mesh floor no boards, but yes you could fit 6-8 large birds in there. No insulation, but if I was using it outside for chickens, I think I would wrap it with Tyvek or something, Ducks don't mind drafts, but chickens do.

I also found it interesting about the stamps on the pallets. I'm going to be very careful looking in the future. Thank you for all the pics and information!

HISIRISHGEMchickenstock is May 28th in Harpursville. Very kid friendly as I have 5 of my own. Several from this thread are coming , maybe one of them can put a link to the thread on here. I'm a techno tard so I can't do it.

Hahaha. Too funny. I'll check to see what my husbands schedule will be like for that date. If he has it off, we'll come. It sounds like a lot of fun! Thank you for the invite.

Lol, chicken girl, I can add links on my phone but they are usually thirty lines long, only on BYC.
I'll try;https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1058760/new-york-mini-chickenstock-2016

I've ordered lots of things from Etsy! I haven't had anything yet that has been bad. If you order multiple items per vender than you will pay multiple shipping. Try to stick with one vender if you can but I've found some excellent products on Etsy. They're not all that cheap sometimes, but I find quality products that I'm willing to pay for.

Oh, that sounds pretty nice! If you know the address, could you please sent it through private message please? I'd love to take a ride out there if they still do it. I'm not sure if my husband will be willing to drive all the way out there, but it's worth a try. That's a great deal if they still charge that price for all the ammenities. Thank you for sharing that idea too!
