NY chicken lover!!!!

Maybe at Chicken Stock. I've got plans for for my incubator until then.

Possibly! My eggs are due to hatch this week so I'll let you know after that.

Okay. Let me know! I will be setting up breeding pens within the next month...weather permitting...for my Isbars, Black swedish hens (Svart Hona), Sulmtalers, Bielfelders and maybe light sussex.

@rancher hicks yes these are ideal chicks. I used the electrolytes you can get at tractor supply in their water. I just changed them to pine shavings, but yes I did have paper towels. I have been using Dumor and have seen them eating but I'll mash some up for them. They have the red heat lamp in my basement which is nice and quiet. I have a thermometer and the temp was a little high initially but I have since adjusted it.

Right now none look super tired like the others before they passed.
Please accept my sympathy and I don't mean any harm but.

Electrolytes to newborns is not good. They don't need them unless there is a problem and the basic chick starter is all the need. Nothing else. The sugar water just a couple of days worth boosts their energy level. Then it's just feed and water. NO grit, NO treats, NO vitamins, Nothing else.

These are newborn babies. They generally sleep a lot and they should be allowed to sleep.

To, Everyone:

Most folks don't need over the counter vitamins unless the doctor prescribes them. Vitamins fed to babies can cause kidney problems. We wouldn't eat junk for ALL the time yet folks think dumping treat after treat be it household leftovers or store bought treats is okay for chickens. Chickens like us need a balanced diet.

Please do some research. I'm just a chicken keeper not an expert and I make no claims but much of what I do is from what the experts write. I don't feed sugar water ALL the time to new chicks, but I've read it can help "shipped" chicks. I don't generally need it for chicks I've hatched.

Much of these "treats" and additives are to make money! They are not NECESSARY. Just like the food fads we endure things for our pets are gimmics.

Generally we don't post our failures. Like the time I had the heat to close the chick died. Or the time the lights went out, twice! and I lost chicks. Now I use two lights just in case. Or the last time chicks jumped out in the basement and died because I waited to long to put a lid on the brooder.

Not separating the broody hen and her chick got killed by the others. If you don't have a separate place for a hen, I don't recommend letting her hatch chicks. I just didn't listen to the experts.

We all make mistakes and it's no use "crying over spilled milk" but I do try to not make the same mistake twice. I have I'm ashamed to say.

Ruby I hope things go well with your other chicks and again I am sorry for your trouble. I've eggs in the incubator and I can't be sure what will or won't hatch but I'll give you a shout to see if there is anything I can do for you. I never keep ALL the chicks.

Love you all,

They are beautiful!!! Do you enjoy them? Are they a meat/dual bird?

Yes dual purpose. My first experience with them. Supposed to be good layers and good winter layers. Biggest chicken breed. Were bred to take over turkey industry before the giant broad breasted turkeys came out. They were popular in the meat market especially for capons before the cornishX came out. They lost favor because they take a long time to grow, eat a lot but I haven't noticed them eating much. Many other breeds have better feed to meat conversion ratio. Giants take 8 months to a yr to get to full weight, and are not worth processing young, they mostly grow their frame/bones first. I've heard of capons getting up to 18lbs. I processed a cockerel about a month ago, legs/thighs were huge, and dark like turkey legs and very tender.
The white variety is rare, not many breeding them. Black, blue, and splash are much more common.
'Framac' in New Berlin NY has nice blacks and blue splash, show quality I believe if anyone is interested in getting giants.
Definitely keepers for me.

Is anyone looking for hatching eggs for blue/green layers?   I am looking to sell some.  I have two pens...one has a CCL roo over CCL hen & Olive egger hens.  The other house has an EE Roo over 2 EE hens, one CCL hen and 2 twins which are 1/2 blue isbar and 1/2 BCM and they lay a cool olive speckle egg.

I collected 8 yesterday.  I thought I would throw it out here before I advertised anywhere else.

I would love some ccl eggs, I am working. On an emerald egger project and am having no luck tracking down pullets, what are you looking for them, and do you ship?

During chores tonight I decided to take a look at one of my hens that looked like she was getting a little roughed up by the roosters. I was was just going to check her out and then put a saddle on her till I lifted her wing...

I don't know when it happened or how. Neither of the boys that are in the coop have big spurs, just still nubs. It looks like it has to be a at least a few days old. Looks not good. Have her in my crib brooder away from the others. Cleaned it out and wrapped it up to keep it clean. May try to cut off the necrotic tissue once I get it flushed again tomorrow and see about patching her back up.

Any suggestions?

Last summer I had a hen with flystrike where maggots had eaten into her under the vent and made a deep wound. I soaked her in a warm epsom salt bath for 20 minutes a day and then wrapped her in a towel to dry off some, then blow dried her. She loved it. I used an old canner for her bath and sat her by my feet so I could keep her from jumping out. After she was dry I covered the wound with vetrycin and she healed beautifully. No covering the wound as it has to be open to dry out and heal from the inside out. You will see the wound shrink in size every day and when it is about the size of a dime you can stop the baths. You can also use chlorhexidine which is a wound wash and inexpensive. Find it in any pharmacy.

Got an email from Bushy Mountain. 5% off entire order

5% is nothing. I love these percents off ads that won't even cover the shipping.

I can buy Bee supplies at Country Max now. Same cost and no shipping to pay. Plus I have it right NOW!

Though there are folks on CL that sell bee hive and all that.

In all honesty I didn't check out Bushy Mountains prices, but I did years ago. I'm still mulling over getting bees.

At least them I can leave in the winter. Right?

I don't have any of my breeding pens set up yet and I have some interesting CCL that threw the recessive gene and are white & crested and one non-crested. They lay the blue egg too. So, if you are looking for show CCL- I don't have them yet because everyone is together. However, I will post my pics and maybe some of them can help you with your emerald project! If not...no worries!
The first pic of the eggs is in sunlight..all the same eggs collected within the last 12 hours.
