@rancher hicks yes these are ideal chicks. I used the electrolytes you can get at tractor supply in their water. I just changed them to pine shavings, but yes I did have paper towels. I have been using Dumor and have seen them eating but I'll mash some up for them. They have the red heat lamp in my basement which is nice and quiet. I have a thermometer and the temp was a little high initially but I have since adjusted it.
Right now none look super tired like the others before they passed.
Please accept my sympathy and I don't mean any harm but.
Electrolytes to newborns is not good. They don't need them unless there is a problem and the basic chick starter is all the need. Nothing else. The sugar water just a couple of days worth boosts their energy level. Then it's just feed and water. NO grit, NO treats, NO vitamins, Nothing else.
These are newborn babies. They generally sleep a lot and they should be allowed to sleep.
To, Everyone:
Most folks don't need over the counter vitamins unless the doctor prescribes them. Vitamins fed to babies can cause kidney problems. We wouldn't eat junk for ALL the time yet folks think dumping treat after treat be it household leftovers or store bought treats is okay for chickens. Chickens like us need a balanced diet.
Please do some research. I'm just a chicken keeper not an expert and I make no claims but much of what I do is from what the experts write. I don't feed sugar water ALL the time to new chicks, but I've read it can help "shipped" chicks. I don't generally need it for chicks I've hatched.
Much of these "treats" and additives are to make money! They are not NECESSARY. Just like the food fads we endure things for our pets are gimmics.
Generally we don't post our failures. Like the time I had the heat to close the chick died. Or the time the lights went out, twice! and I lost chicks. Now I use two lights just in case. Or the last time chicks jumped out in the basement and died because I waited to long to put a lid on the brooder.
Not separating the broody hen and her chick got killed by the others. If you don't have a separate place for a hen, I don't recommend letting her hatch chicks. I just didn't listen to the experts.
We all make mistakes and it's no use "crying over spilled milk" but I do try to not make the same mistake twice. I have I'm ashamed to say.
Ruby I hope things go well with your other chicks and again I am sorry for your trouble. I've eggs in the incubator and I can't be sure what will or won't hatch but I'll give you a shout to see if there is anything I can do for you. I never keep ALL the chicks.
Love you all,
Rancher
