NY chicken lover!!!!

Please accept my sympathy and I don't mean any harm but.

Electrolytes to newborns is not good.  They don't need them unless there is a problem and the basic chick starter is all the need. Nothing else. The sugar water just a couple of days worth boosts their energy level. Then it's just feed and water. NO grit, NO treats, NO vitamins, Nothing else.

These are newborn babies.  They generally sleep a lot and they should be allowed to sleep.

To, Everyone:

Most folks don't need over the counter vitamins unless the doctor prescribes them. Vitamins fed to babies can cause kidney problems. We wouldn't eat junk for ALL the time yet folks think dumping treat after treat be it household leftovers or store bought treats is okay for chickens. Chickens like us need a balanced diet.

Please do some research. I'm just a chicken keeper not an expert and I make no claims but much of what I do is from what the experts write.  I don't feed sugar water ALL the time to new chicks, but I've read it can help "shipped" chicks.  I don't generally need it for chicks I've hatched.

Much of these "treats" and additives are to make money!  They are not NECESSARY. Just like the food fads we endure things for our pets are gimmics.

Generally we don't post our failures. Like the time I had the heat to close the chick died. Or the time the lights went out, twice! and I lost chicks. Now I use two lights just in case. Or the last time chicks jumped out in the basement and died because I waited to long to put a lid on the brooder.

Not separating the broody hen and her chick got killed by the others. If you don't have a separate place for a hen, I don't recommend letting her hatch chicks. I just didn't listen to the experts.

We all make mistakes and it's no use "crying over spilled milk" but I do try to not make the same mistake twice. I have I'm ashamed to say.

Ruby I hope things go well with your other chicks and again I am sorry for your trouble. I've eggs in the incubator and I can't be sure what will or won't hatch but I'll give you a shout to see if there is anything I can do for you. I never keep ALL the chicks.  :fl

Love you all,

Rancher

Thanks Rancher. I had followed some advice to use the save a chick electrolytes, I'll go with sugar water next time. They have just normal water as of now. I have 4 left. I've definitely learned from this experience. I think for me hatching is the way to go.

They are creme crested legbars that hatched white..Here are some of their juvenile pics. There is one more but she laid a tan egg so she lives with the sussex now! See their little mohawks! .
Oh my gosh how do I get one of these crested white girls? Or eggs? Or chicks? Or something lol. I had a white Legbar hatch in my 2012 Legbar flock and always regretted not keeping him (no longer have any of that flock)

I am sorry about your chicks Ruby...it's hearbreaking to see them go. ( I lost my little guy with the splits this morning...worked with him everyday for two weeks. I called the breeder just so they knew what that pen was throwing. (Cross beak and leg splays) however, I am just thrilled to have an opportunity at all!)
