NY chicken lover!!!!

Chicken math is rough. I started with only 10 so each kid had 2. Then hubby bought me 10 more. Then 2 passed. Then I wanted a roo or 2 so I got 2. Then I saw a beautiful lavender orpington boy that needed a country home so I got him. Ack!!! Now comes the hard part, who to breed to who? I want to split the 3 boys into 3 separate coops and give each boy a few of each breed of lady's. Now it's up to 21 and the hunt for an incubator. . I only want to hatch a few,

,I promise.
I don't believe you...a few huh? Lol! I have almost always had some chickens, took a few yrs off then figured six would be enough...26...36....need to freezer camp and sell some more so I can buy more....hatch more....

You are not kidding that chicken math is real! Add an incubator, and the potential breeds available are amazing, then add in a couple mature breeding groups and a projects and you are really in trouble. Every egg holds incredible potential... Need to know what might become of that egg... Stop, walk away... Or better yet, wash the eggs and sell them or give them away as eating eggs... Lol. No trouble here. Just hangin w my chickens

My kids think I'm nuts. I'm not nuts, wife says I take more pictures of my birds than my kids...I take more pics and video of the kids than she does so...
Weighed my giant roo today, only eight and a half pounds, @ 8 months, he's huge thought he'd weigh more. They say they don't put on weight till their over a yr.

I don't think he likes me anymore, planed on weighing them all, it was to much work...

He's gorgeous! How did u get him to stand on the scale? Never thought of trying that. When I weighed meat birds, I use a human scale, hold the bird, then subtract my weight. It's depressing to see how much I weigh, but quick to weigh a bunch of birds (if they're catchable).

A lot has been going on here, it's crazy....Sorry i hope it settles down for you

Now back to a happier topic... Chickens.

After having my chickens for the year I have come to find a couple of breeds I don't want in my flock anymore.
Curious what breeds didnt you like ?

Does anyone have normal size BAs? Krazy 4 chicks maybe ?
Does anyone have Blue Australorpes? Blues are not the norm..only a few breed them

When it rains it pours!!! Had my hen with the cut in the crib brooder on the porch and it has saved her life. I went out to do chores this morning and was thinking how quiet it was. No crowing...Once I opened the door to my hoop coop I found out why...They were dead! They were all on the floor all dead except one rooster. He isn't in good shape at all I think that his neck may be broken. I'm not sure, but I think that I'm going to have to put him down. I can't bare to see him suffering. They weren't eaten at all just all dead. I'm pretty sure that it was a mink/weasel. There wasn't any signs of it being anything bigger. I have the welded wire over the panels so there wasn't a way for anything big to get in there. I did notice this afternoon a hole by the pop door that was about 2 inches wide. I have straw bales in front of the door because I don't use that one during the winter. I have cleaned up all the bodies and set a trap in the coop . I hope that it will come back tonight so I can take care of it. I just really worry cause the hoop coop is right next to the duck coop. I would lose it if I woke up to all my ducks dead! The hardest thing was telling the kids.,, Oh and they were the all of my large fowl birds...I knew I needed more, but I didn't think that it would be this soon...

Hello everyone! I am brand new to raising chickens, I am trying to learn and gather as much info as possible. I am hoping to be able to purchase a small flock and start raising chickens for eggs this spring. I was thinking about starting out with 6-12 chicks. I am also on a budget so I am looking at making a coop from pallets. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I am located in Saratoga county, any other's located in Saratoga county?
