NY chicken lover!!!!

Sorry to hear about your hens gramma. It won't be winning any awards, bc none of us have any prior experience, but as long as it keeps the chickens in, and the weather and other critters out, it will do just fine.

A warm welcome to all the newcomers!
Thank you for everyones kind words ...

We expect to see pictures of this ...endeavor... take some before it is finished ...so we can see it progress

I wonder why it is ok to keep chickens in such a big city as NYC, and so many small towns and villages ban them? That makes absolutely no sense to me. There doesn't even seem to be a limit to how many I can keep here. Though I suppose if it ever became an issue with neighbors, then they would put some rules in place, other than the 'no rooster' rule. Even with my loud rooster, and the one on the next block, no one has complained so far, I don't think. Speaking of whom, Chick has been getting progressively more aggressive towards me, since he first attacked me two weeks or so ago. Today was the worst. He came at me several times for prolonged attacks today. I finally whacked him with the broom. His days are definitely numbered. Only the thought of how my poor son would feel when he finds out that his pet has passed on, is making me hesitate and put it off. I've never killed a chicken before, and this one is humongous. I will most definitely need help. I'm not sure if I could bring myself to eat him, though. I have loads of relatives that would love to take him off my hands, once the dirty work is done. They've been commenting on it for a few months now.

Congratulations on the build! It doesn't have to be pretty - just functional...sorry to hear that Chick is being a pest - sounds like his days are numbered....

Sorry to hear about your hens gramma. I finally got the corid today, if you can believe that

. I didn't notice any bloody poop today, and very little yesterday, so I won't even bother to use it. So it will sit there in the off chance I ever need it. Hopefully I won't. My aunt and uncle came over today to get my pallet coop started. We didn't dismantle the pallets completely, left them mostly whole. We finished the back and two sides, and they're coming again tomorrow to try to finish it. It won't be winning any awards, bc none of us have any prior experience, but as long as it keeps the chickens in, and the weather and other critters out, it will do just fine.

Devona- I am happy they are doing better!!!!

I am no expert but If that was coccodisis your chickens would more than likely be dead already. Mine died within several days of noticing a small amount to them with huge amounts of blood. Keep that corrid under your sink just in case you ever do need it along with some vitamin/electrolyte mix. I am so happy that your chickens are doing better!

Can not wait to see pics of your coop!

I had my favorite rooster get aggressive and try and mate me. I used to carry a stick and finally he had to go. Hated to do it but every time I bent down to the little chick house he would nail me in the back. He also broke skin through my jeans one day. He made it so I didn't want to go out in my yard. Luckily, no one was attached to him but me. Now, the roosters I have are sweet except for Kung Fu Silkie...he still fights me on every entrance. He's so small I just swat him aside.

every time he charges you snatched his --- up and hold him like a football until he stops fighting you. Give it a week or so and if he doesn't correct his behavior I'm sure he will make a great soup bird. But try and correct the problem first.

@Devona that's one of the things I always bring up when the discussion of in town chickens comes up, come on, NYC allows chickens!! And yeah there is some small rural towns with chicken bans if you live in town, silly.
I'm glad we live 'out of town', if we lived in town they'd probably put in ordinances to ban children, or at least muzzle them.. Lol!

I would rather have a full blown farm next door to me than humans any day. At least the animals won't steal my stuff or stalk my kids. I think every bit of country life that can invade city life is a good thing. If more people had animals they would be happier and have less time to be mean. Chickens are a great opening animal as they are small and serve a purpose.

I THINK it's because they have an international population and it's the least of their troubles.

Too I think they reason we have small town banning them is because of neglect by chicken keepers to tend to them. I've delivered mail and I would raid some homes that stank of cat and dog feces.

Too I think it's due to ignorance in chicken keeping. If properly done it is NOT a lot of work. If it is for you then they're doing it wrong. Much like other things in life.

Gramma I'm sorry about your loss. It never gets easy.

the hardest part of chicken keeping is deciding what breeds I want now and what breeds to wait on. The rest is child's play, literally my kids do most of the work.

Are any of you currently working with silkies as a breeding project? If so send me a pm please.
Lord have mercy! Are you kidding me? To many people like this breed. They're not for anything useful except brooding chicks. They're not good layers, the roosters are noisy and you don't want to eat them. This is a breed folks get based on nothing but looks.

I have no doubt you'll find lots of folks working with them, though I'm not sure what their goals are. You're sure to have lots of competition if you intend to show them.

I got some eggs once from a breeder in AL and three chicks. The rooster would not shut up! I wanted to strangle him. I sold the two I kept and have not regretted it.

I still say they're aliens from another planet. I recommend wearing a tinfoil hat when around these things.

Me at the last chicken show.
