NY chicken lover!!!!

See what they did?

I forgot what I came here for too.

Is it okay to start potatoes? I plan to plant thme this year and wondered if it's okahy to start them now? Are we going to get more snow and ice cold weather? Are the pilgrims on their way? (if April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? )

Blasted silkies!

Lord have mercy! Are you kidding me? To many people like this breed. They're not for anything useful except brooding chicks. They're not good layers, the roosters are noisy and you don't want to eat them. This is a breed folks get based on nothing but looks. I have no doubt you'll find lots of folks working with them, though I'm not sure what their goals are. You're sure to have lots of competition if you intend to show them. I got some eggs once from a breeder in AL and three chicks. The rooster would not shut up! I wanted to strangle him. I sold the two I kept and have not regretted it. I still say they're aliens from another planet. I recommend wearing a tinfoil hat when around these things. Me at the last chicken show.

take 3 deep breaths and calm down. Heck no those alien birds are not for me. I need dual purpose birds. I know someone who could care less if they are productive or loud as long as they are cute as a button. No I do not think they are cute. She wants to have a few for yard decorations. She has other breeds but wants an eye candy breed too. I'm not crazy, I wear my aluminum foil hat around those strange critters from another world. Lol.

Okay I ate a Snickers and feel better.

I sold my C. Rocks which I think are the best dual line I had. I do have some chicks if you want to come and get them free of charge. I have eggs in the incu too, so might have more. Next few days will tell. Friendly and calm. Not noisy either. Rooster was very large. I do have one hen left. She's got lots of white but hasn't laid since her family left.

I just kid about the Silkies. Well to some degree. They're not a very useful FARM bird.

I do agree one should keep a FARM line for utility and another just for looks but at least another that is on the endangered list or good for eggs or meat. I like a mixed flock. I have Frenchy and Buckwheat Frizzles in with the Delawares. You can mix some EE's in with Marans and get OE's. You can keep New Hampshires with some Delaware hens or a white breed and get sex link chicks. Red roosters over White hens will give you sex link chicks. Not silkies though, they're a dangerous breed with other birds. The make the other birds do all the dirty work. Drive them bonkers.

There are some very nice breeds. I'd recommend the New Hampshire. If I WAS going to stay in birds that would be a choice I'd choose. Sand hill is out til July but they'd be my first choice for chicks. Then you'll want to hatch your own replacements.

Remember to practice safe Bio Security. No one in to the coop or yard and a closed flock. You'll be glad you did.

Starting after chickenstock I will have a closed flock. That's when I'm getting my assortment of birds. Bio security is a must, well as much as can be with a free range flock. This year (with the exception of future chickenstock events) will be the last year I purchase eggs or chicks.

My "fancy" breed is yet to be determined. I'm getting a couple in May. And for farm birds yupp I need big hearty birds that lay well and the cockerels get decent size quick. That's why I'm crossing my Astrolorp with my orpington, both big, sweet and productive.

About all your birds, if I had a coop for them I would take them. Plus the husband thinks I need no more until May. Little does he know I have eggs in a friends incubator.

I'm debating getting German New Hampshire hatching eggs from Eight Acres Farm in Gainesville FL on the way back up from Florida next month. Just don't know if I need another breed. I'd save shipping cost and risk. They have really nice big Delaware's also. And Welsummers that lay eggs as dark as Marans.

I have A Silkie Flock. Buff, Blue, Splash, White, Gray....and one Blue Rooster. They lay eggs..
enough for us. I have 4 dozen in the refrigerator. We LOVE our Silkies. Regards, Aria

My silkie is broody for the first time and is doing so good! I put some OE eggs under her. She's very devoted and very sweet to me...no pecking. Hissed at my DH tho lol! She's porcelain and I'd love a lavender or another porcelain to breed with her

TSC 'silkies' are great layers and meaty. They might not be anywhere near standard but they're fluffy very friendly and have black meat. I haven't tried one yet but I do have the roo in the freezer. I don't remember what he dressed out at but I know he was over five lbs liveweight. No more crowing all night long :) you might be right rancher, what kind of rooster in his right mind crows 24 hrs a day and gets the rest crowing at night? Alien rooster! No one crowing at night now.... :)

SOP is the goal of the person for the silkies. Is there even an SOP for them? All I know is they are funny looking and I don't think my dog would agree it's a chicken so he might eat them. My dogs both know that feathered things are friends not snacks and a silkie is more fuzzy.
