NY chicken lover!!!!

I started fermenting feed and I am going to start sprouting for my chickens. You know with all the time I have...LOL
How long do you leave the feed in the bucket before you dish it out?

Well the hatch is almost done.

More than eleven I think. I had a Marans I helped out a bit but it died.

Marans are such a pain to hatch out. I don't know why. They just don't break out of the shell good.

Dels and C. Rocks seem easy. EE's too.

Got one lavender and one cross with Big Delores. She's a Lt. Sussex. Her chicks has lavender on it's back. I'll post pics when I can.

I've been offering eggs to folks to buy since I've agreed to sell the entire lavender and Blue EE hens and the roo.

I will be selling the Marans too and the Marsh Daisies. If I can find folks willing to pay a fair price.
Rancher, if be interested in a maran pullet or two, unless you are close enough for a drive for eggs, I'm in 10524. I need a dark chocolate egg to round out my egg basket. Thanks!
Kate

My older kids think my obsession with poultry is weird, tell me all the time. You know your chicken obsessed when you have more pictures of chickens on your phone than you do your children I guess. Lol!

I do have lots of pics of chickens in my phone and no human children to take pics of. More pics of chickens than anything else, tho. Never claimed to be normal, lol.

I was going three days, using three different containers rotating them. Now I use a five gallon bucket and go one day leaving a little to mix in the new.

Yes I guess it wasnt clear she was dead ....when I found her ..
Her neck bone was totally bare ...no feathers or flesh on it at all .
Try this with your ROO they respect dominance..dont wait till he runs at you ...run at him every chance you get .
.

That's a great idea! Yesterday he attacked my aunt. She wanted to pass by him but he was in the way, and she poked him with the shears she was holding, and he came at her and pecked her on the kneecap. Today he went after my younger son, the one who brought him home. A real birdbrained thing to do, it was, because that child is the the only reason my husband hadn't put him in the pot yet.

I think pellets and crumbles ferment faster, maybe as fast as three days. Whole grains take a couple days longer. What I do is I use up the feed until there's only a serving or so left, then mix in fresh water, stir it up, then mix in the fresh feed. The old feed helps the new feed to ferment faster. But the first batch takes a few days.

If anyone were to look through the photos and videos on my phone, they would definitely have some unfavorable comment to make. My cousin already told me that I spend more time making chicken food than food for my kids.

Chicken girl, I do hope your nail injury is not too serious or have any lasting damage! I haven't had a tetanus shot in over ten years myself. Gramma, I hope you're feeling a tad better. Glass hen, the same to you. It must be difficult to make yourself rest and recuperate when you're accustomed to always be doing stuff. Now, on the other hand, if you're as lazy as I am.... Well that's another story. I haven't been getting the amount of sleep I'm used to, since my husband went away. No more daytime naps for me. And I get much more done, but I'm aching and sore and ready to conk out by 9 pm. My joints have been aching for the last year or so, and it's gotten progressively worse. I'm afraid to go to the doc about it. Lord knows what she's gonna tell me.
So my coop was finished ish ( no paint yet) yesterday. Tonight is the chicks first night in it. They were none too pleased when I shoved them in. Every time I put another one in , the previous ones tried to hop out. When I checked on them after dark, the fools were roosting against the hardware cloth on the top of the wall, where the pallet ends and the wire begins. So I'm going to find poop on the wall I bet. Oh well. And it's windy out tonight. I blocked the wind from the lower part, and they choose to sleep on the upper part. Last night I came home too late to put straw and such in the coop, after dropping my aunt and uncle off, and hadnt put them in their cages since I left the house too early to put them to bed. So when I turned on the back lights, I saw only the two Buckeyes in the enclosed garden bed where they spend their days. I had a moment where I thought I lost the three dominiques, but on further searching, I found two in the shed with the two adult red stars, and the other one roosting under the wide awning attached to the house, with the rooster sitting below keeping her company, I suppose. Usually he's the first one in the shed at bedtime.

Regular chicken food - Usually 3 -4 days before it ferments ...make sure it has plenty of water & stir every day ..look for bubbles ..
and a yeasty smell..do not completely close it up ...as it can explode the top off or break a glass jar
Stir it ESP after it ferments ..as it reacts to the air on the top & will look like it is bad ...just re -stir the top in the mix
whole / cracked Grains - 5-7 days to ferment ..
