@PhoredaBurds apparently my yard is not big enough for both gold boys yet. King ,the new kid on the block, has decided when he's out at the same time as golden boy he will stay right with me. Honey, my cham-wow girl is roosting sweetly between Bertha and Crooked, my head girls. Golden girl won't get more than 2 feet from King or she is freaking out, so the 2 of them are snuggled in the cage tonight so she doesn't have a heart attack.

A fourth one hatched & is still fluffing out. Will list on CL if no one here wants them. They hatched with cemanis who are small chicks but look like giants next to the serama chicks. . I need to move them quick before I get attached.

@rancher hicks I believe chickens have a hard life in Alaska, with the amount of time they have lack of light in the winter. One member on BYC 'Alaskan' has said chickens in Alaska will starve to death if you don't add artificial light, the cold isn't as big a problem as the lack of daylight. 'Alaskan' has quite a few breeds.

I will have to have a look. I did not know that. I haven't followed the Alaska posters. I do have a friend of sorts from here. She's in Sterling about two hours away. Many places here can't be gotten to by car. Some only by private plane.

I only chose heavy breeds due to the cold. Also they're less flighty.

I agree sex links lay lots of very large eggs, but I have heard from others being such good layers they don't live long due to burn out or laying issues. I myself have heard Sweedish flowers lay well and large eggs so I'm giving them a try but I can't say from personal experience. I loved my bielefelders of the past for the size of the eggs and color. They laid well for me and are auto sexing so if you hatch you could sell the mails cheep to someone who wanted to raise them for meat.

I always advocate keeping more than one breed. This way while one is taking a break the others might be laying.

I only get attached to a few birds.

Also keep in mind that what works for some may not work for you with regards to care and feeding.

I think to many non feed foods can throw off nutritional balance. I do know stress kills. I don't let just anyone around my birds. Your birds know YOU. Try to keep things calm.

All that said, I prefer Delaware, Marans and EE's. Oh and the occasional fun breed. Frizzles or Naked Necks. My Delawares are easy and take in anyone. Old or young they seem to do well. Perhaps because they're not over crowded. I miss my C. Rocks.

Hi I'm in Eagle River, Alaska (just north of anchorage)... I have a nice backyard flock of chickens, as do many of my neighbors. They actually do quite well here! The only thing that the light affects is their laying cycle. If you want to keep up your supply of eggs during winter, you have to provide artificial lights. Many people string Christmas lights inside the coop and put them on a timer. Hope this helps

If it's dark, it's night time, and they're sleeping, not eating when they're sleeping. When the not eating hours is way longer than eating hours, starvation is possible. They don't night feed like us.

Howdy NY Chicken Lover's!!
I'm in Ulster County, Highland NY and this is all new to me, keeping chickens, BYC all new so bare with me, there might be some very obvious questions that I might/probably will ask! Lol
I come to all my fellow NY'ers today with a bit of a dilemma, long story short, I started out not that long ago, given 5 birds from a friend of mine, turns out that 4 of the 5 are Cockerels, wouldn't mind 1, but 4!?!? Lol
Guess I've got some meat sooner then expected!! Lol
The birds are RIR's approximately 15-16 weeks old, yea I'll have meat but I want and need eggs, just wondering if there is any place local to me with a good reputation, looking to purchase pullets, prefer to raise them myself, not looking for started.
So if anyone can give me a local place or even an online hatchery that has a very low purchase minimum and won't kill me on shipping, that would be very much appreciated! Thank you all in advance, and hope to share stories and info. With all of you!!
