I didn't even notice availability of the 55 Flowering breed. I put 3 hens and 2 roosters in the cart and with shipping it was $270. I was trying to justify the purchase. I was thinking that maybe if ask survived the trip I'd sell a pair for $100. And then I was trying to figure out how many birds I'd have to sell to get my investment back, lol. I'm bad and was thinking of selling chicks for only $10 each and that'd be filling my incubator of 40 about 4/5 times.... Then I thought... It's freezing out, so maybe I'll wait.

I'm not, what is it NIP, tested yet. You have to have 30 birds to qualify for the test... If I wait to process roosters, then I'd have enough... Then my husband reminds me that this is suppose to be a hobby. :p

How far are you?

Not sure how far but probably not less then 3 hours. To lazy to look it up right now

I only know the availability because I called them up. They can do a small order like that but cant do a big one. Like you I can't justify the price. I'm guessing you haven't heard of rarebreedauctions yet. I was planning on getting mine that way. Wanted them now so I would have eggs by summer. I'm not NPIP but want to be someday. It's hard to raise chicks over winter. I don't like to but I'm chickenless at the moment. I got some eggs in the bator now. Love your coops by the way. You can tell hubby to come build mine if he's board. If I get some
55's before you ill let you know. I might end up with extra or sell hatching eggs in the Sumer. In fact I wanted to ship eggs free so I can practice shipping but was going to wait until I get NPIP.
Have you tried the white bresse yet? I found them to be fantastic for meat and eggs.

3 hours isn't too bad. I search key words on Facebook but only found someone who purchased all hens from Greenfire. Shipping eggs you don't have to be NPIP, just if you're mailing live chicks. I haven't tried the bresse. I'm focusing on auto sexing or Sexlinked.

Maybe if for the first year I sell chicks for $15/$20 I can justify the purchase. I don't want to wait....

I don't know if you guys know or if it'll help but GFF is running a special until the 15th on their gift certificates - buy one before then and it's 20% off. So, you could theoretically buy a gift certificate in the amount you need, then turn around and use it and technically be getting 20% off the chicks.

if your willing to travel 4 hours in May we would love another chickaholic at Chickenstock.

@cutipatooti I don't have a lot of birds to spare but if your interested I'm sure I can find you a couple, just 1 stipulation. You must take a cockerel. They are all good boys but I have a bunch.

If anyone is interested I have an Isabella leghorn cockerel that needs a good home. He's gorgeous, non aggressive, and good with the girls but he has wing patch so I cannot breed him. Also have an ayam cemani cockerel looking for a non breeding home - his comb and wattles are red so he's a no go for breeding here. I can hold them for chickenstock as long as it's a guarantee that you'll take them at that time.

This is the Flock Swap I'll attend in the spring. We're also trying to get a smaller one in Chautauqua county.

Also check out the WNY Chicken Peeps Facebook closed group. There are 2 people selling off their lavender Marans and blue Wyandottes, and so much more.

I also forgot that I'll be selling Jubilee Orpingtons in the spring. They're hatchery stock so they are $10 straight run. But they are easily sexable by 2 weeks.

@Amy King Hanson I was going to say myfivegirls on here has Swedish Flower hens, breeds and sells them a lot cheaper. But I just checked her website, looks like she is no longer selling them.

If you can sell them for a good price they are worth it. I think it depends on who else is selling them at the time. I find locally there are a lot of people that just want layers and are not willing to pay that price for day old chicks. But there are some who know their value and will jump on it.

Thanks for letting me know, I'm going to look into it.

Thanks so much for the offer but I'm not looking for adult birds a the moment. That's because I never set up for the winter, sold some of my coops and never finished up my fencing. It's a work in progress at the moment. I'm building more smaller coops in the basement that I will put outside before spring for whatever chicks I hatch over winter.
