NY chicken lover!!!!

Gramma chick, great stories! I had old bagels that I could hardly break up, so have them to the flock yesterday. I too have a pile of pumpkins, but they've frozen. But with today's thaw I'll probably give them more.
Processing Mr. Tommy today as he turned aggressive. I have two replacement unrelated young toms, but hopefully they figure things out by the time I'm ready to hatch turkey poults. One hen is already laying, but I doubt they're fertilized. Too early anyways.

Thawed / Frozen Pumpkins are actually easier for the chickens to eat ..it softens the pulp .
I split them in half ..let them eat the seeds ...For those who have chickens ...who dont like pumpkin that much ..
Fill the hole with a little scratch ..the pumpkin will disappear ..
Grandma Chick, I love your ideas for your chickens.

Thank you ....

Yes, mine had been coated in ice, but when I threw the thawed pumpkin in there, they descended upon it like vultures! When they were frozen, they ignored them. It'd be like us eating ice cream outside during the winter!

Same with huge zucchinis, now that everything has thawed they disappeared pretty quick.
Yr we had tons of pie pumpkins, 63 out of four plants, chickens got quite a few of them. Apparently the chipmunks liked the seeds also cause we had pumpkin plants growing everywhere that spring :-D

Bored Chickens?
Had some Old Hard Bread I thought I would hang up last night .
They were so occupied this morning I didnt hear a Peep out of them .Even the Roosters didnt crow ..
This is Cutie and his old ladies ..he likes them and they like him
..
What a neat idea. I may just save the bread and string it up. I always have a few slices or bagels or rolls. I'll make a permanent needle and just string things as they beomce available.

I was on a pumpkin mission today ..

I picked up too many pumpkins....I Still had 3 bins in the car ...
My hubbys ..."what are you going to do with those pumpkins in my car ?"
I drove around near my house today ...and offered them to people that I knew had chickens..
I got rid of all them ..Hubby was so happy ...he hasnt driven his car since I filled it with pumpkins...

Every year I try to get as many leftover pumpkins as I can, so I can toss them into the run and keep the girls busy. They spend time pecking at frozen pumpkins and eventually they're gone.

Hi all.

Chicken girl 15 Reffered me here. (Thank you!) I'm in Newark Valley NY - Tioga county. Close to Ithaca and Binghamton areas. It's nice to see so many chicken people fairly close to me here! I'm kind of a chicken newb...have only been a chicken Mom of 9 for a year now but have been soaking up info from you pros like a sponge. I prefer bantams and hope to make some connections with local breeders via this group to get some more Banties. Especially Looking for bantam bearded Millie fluer D'Uccle, Serama, sebright, EE, and frizzle polish.

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Nature Berry Farm nr Rochester, we got some of our chicks there in 2015, and found Jim to be very helpful.

I remembered reading of a fire in the chick barn a while ago, but hadn't been following their website or Facebook. Well I just found a Facebook page and lots of sad news - the business is permanently closed, Jim was hospitalized with lung problems, relating to processing chickens, they sold the property and got divorced.

He is now living in Tennessee, and writing a book on chickens, had some posts asking for chicken anecdotes etc. He continues to post handy chicken hints from his 40+ years of experience, and mentions he would be happy to answer questions regarding chicken care etc

Most recently he put up a post about trying to find a place to rent so he can move back to NY, thought I'd share it here in case anyone knows of something suitable.

(l don't have my own Facebook account to contact him directly, just have access via a family members account )

From Nature Berry Farm Facebook page
thinking of moving back to ny. ideally looking for a rental on a farm with tenant quarters. i have two well trained dogs I have farming knowledge that i could help with. Looking to move by march 1st. Landlord here has been shooting trying to scare my dogs because they bark at him. He said he can shoot within 2 feet of them and not hit them. I really dont want any trouble so if you know of a place or have a place, let me know. Ive been suffering from depression lately and just want a CALM environment. I can afford $600/month in rent as im on disability. I have 40 yrs experience in poultry as well as cattle and milk cow experience, goats and horticulture. Ive operated a greenhouse and grown many types of plants with a degree in hort.

Another night owl on the computer at almost midnight - guess I'll be first to say welcome to the NY thread!

I'm a relative newbie too, with a little pet flock of 4 for the last few years, nr Buffalo, NY.

We love chicken pics if you want to share some of your flock, my gang were not convinced about this snow business earlier in the week, so they are loving the last few days of

temps in the 50's. This pic is from last winter......

I'm more partial to the big birds, bantams are cool though. One of my favorites when I was a kid was a black Japanese bantam hen that hatched the majority of my fathers chicks (RIR), doubt he even knew what a incubator was, she was the best broody mom ever.
I've seen some awesome Mille Fleur D'Uccle, Serama's and some frizzles of varying breeds, hatching eggs on the 24hr auction thread, https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/754060/the-new-crazy-24hr-auction-thread
