Does anyone have any insight on if any of these are Roos or pullets? I am still new at this but we have tons of chicks that are about 3 months old... I really don't know how to tell what some of them are (aside from the obvious - like crowing or the crazy rooster tail / comb)
Hi Tiffany, welcome to the NY Thread - having recently posted pics of my Easter Egger pullet chick age 13 weeks, and someone on here pointing out it was a cockerel, I am certainly NOT an expert - but have been reading about how to tell the differences a lot lately. None of the male characteristics like comb growth, or different types of feathers showed for the first month or so he was here, but once other members of the group alerted me of things to watch for, it was pretty obvious.
There are threads on here, with side by side pics of males and females of the same breed so you can learn how to tell the difference (one called something like 'I can sex your pullets and cockerels' has 100's of photo examples on it). At 3 months males are usually showing redder / bigger combs and wattles compared to females, but the one that I found easiest to use is the 'saddle feathers' these grow in on the back, at the base of the tail, on females they are always rounded, and on males they are always pointed.
Here's how we knew the Easter Egger was a male, you can see his lighter feathers at the top of the back, dropping down the side of the tail, he has pointy saddle feathers, and a comparison photo of the Ameracauna I got from the breeder as a replacement, she has rounded saddle feathers.
Hope this helps - your gang look like they are really enjoying their water melon!
