NY chicken lover!!!!

Does anyone have any insight on if any of these are Roos or pullets? I am still new at this but we have tons of chicks that are about 3 months old... I really don't know how to tell what some of them are (aside from the obvious - like crowing or the crazy rooster tail / comb)

Hi Tiffany, welcome to the NY Thread - having recently posted pics of my Easter Egger pullet chick age 13 weeks, and someone on here pointing out it was a cockerel, I am certainly NOT an expert - but have been reading about how to tell the differences a lot lately. None of the male characteristics like comb growth, or different types of feathers showed for the first month or so he was here, but once other members of the group alerted me of things to watch for, it was pretty obvious.

There are threads on here, with side by side pics of males and females of the same breed so you can learn how to tell the difference (one called something like 'I can sex your pullets and cockerels' has 100's of photo examples on it). At 3 months males are usually showing redder / bigger combs and wattles compared to females, but the one that I found easiest to use is the 'saddle feathers' these grow in on the back, at the base of the tail, on females they are always rounded, and on males they are always pointed.

Here's how we knew the Easter Egger was a male, you can see his lighter feathers at the top of the back, dropping down the side of the tail, he has pointy saddle feathers, and a comparison photo of the Ameracauna I got from the breeder as a replacement, she has rounded saddle feathers.

Its a girl - no pointed saddle feathers here.jpg

Hope this helps - your gang look like they are really enjoying their water melon!

Hi all. I took 7 cockerels to the auction in West Winfield. I'll let you know when I get the check how it went. It's easy enough to drop them off. I had my kids with me otherwise I would have stayed.

Tons? How many is tons. I like it, Can I use it when folks ask me how many chickens I have? "Oh I have tons". This way I don't have to confess to having so many.

So. You know how when you post "free chickens" you get lots of hits? AND they want pics of the chicks /chickens 'n all, right? Well one respondent said "my neighbors chickens got killed by a weasel". It started me thinking. Why not ask for pics of their coop/coops and run.
You see in asking a guy at TSC if he wanted more chickens he commented that he didn't, yada yada Fox yada yada. I realized he wasn't so concerned. Not the kind I'd want to sell or give chickens to.

I wish a chickenstock would be held near me again!
Have you heard of the august chickenstock ?

Anyways, here's Lurch (on left) and a few of his sisters. The white NN pullet has a big black splotch on her back - I think she's offspring of one of my leghorns and pugsley (who was black)..
Glad you were able to get a boy

Hahaha Tons!!! It's about 80ish plus about 24 that are hopefully hatching soon (I was told by my employees I have an unhealthy obsession with my chickens lolol!)

I still have broody hens but three do not have eggs. I'm tempted to give them some Delaware eggs. I've got only EE eggs that I know will throw lavender and marans under them. Plus a few from the marsh daisy/ del cross. I've got plenty of eggs to eat. Chicks are easy enough to give away.

My neighbor left some tomato plants. I'll put them in but not hopeful they'll produce in time.

Still worried about my sneezy Ameracauna, no improvement using VetRX on her skin. Changed the waterer from one with VetRX in to one with apple cider vinegar in, and gave her more natural yoghurt this morning, but still producing snot bubbles, then she wipes her beak to try and clean it off, only to get stuff stuck in the gunk, making them even more blocked up - came home from work today to find a downy feather 'glued' onto one nostril, and a wood shaving to the other.

No-one replied to my original post about it on Saturday (post #56985, page 5699) but if anyone out there can recommend anything that may help her I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

Weighed them this morning, 15 week old Red Sexlink I felt wasn't growing well is 1#8
13 week old Ameracauna is 2#15
