Winter bedding anyone?? I was thinking pine and dried grass? I have a mini coop inside the bigger coop with the nesting boxes in the mini coop. I was thinking the dried grass in the big coop and pine in the mini coop? The only problem with pine is that my girls love to kick it out of the coop and kick it everywhere, and poop gets stuck on the tray! Gross.. They like burying their eggs in the grass though.. Also, should food be inside the coop (for shelter from weather) or outside the coop with a top over it (to keep rain and other things out.) Thanks guys! I'm LOVING this thread - lots of great info!

Glad we are all able to help you My main bedding is straw $3/small bale, but I do supplement with pine needles, dried leaves, dry grass clippings. Make sure that whatever you add is as dry as possible, you don't want mold spores in your coop - it can cause respiratory problems for the birds.

I use Pine Needles , Dry Grass, Dry Leaves Save them in paper leaf bags .
I collect not just mine ...but my neighbors also ..
They are very happy for me to take their leaves .

I use pine shavings in my covered run but it's getting wet anyway in certain areas with all the rain today. My chicks are kicking up the wet stuff and eating what they can find under it. No mud since I have a concrete floor, but I worry that they are eating the wet food that was under the shavings. Will have to take it all out tomorrow when it stops raining.

We have mud in front of the coop with all this rain .
The wet food wont hurt them longs it isnt molded

Lovely, power went out and I have all sorts of young birds under heat lamps. Thank god for broody hens....
