NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all, keep popping in occasionally, but things have gone very quiet over here.

Hope everyone is having a good summer, our mini flock are in their 'summer home' the mobile chicken tractor we move around the veg garden, lots of weedy patches to scratch and peck in, plus dirt to bathe in when we let them free range in the evenings

I'm hoping to add 2 or 3 more pullets / young layers before the winter, not looking for specific breeds, but would be good to add some different colored chickens to my flock, and other colors of eggs to my current range, so if anyone has any suggestions let me know. I'm nr Buffalo, NY

Hello do you have any Hedemora eggs available to be shipped to Louisiana thank you Linda (Lillybug73) I also raise and sell chickens I also do trades on eggs
You might want to check here https://vermont.craigslist.org/grd/d/northfield-chickens-guineas-ducks/6955663463.html
The ad says the have hatching eggs.
I’ve been researching this breed as I’ve been looking to start a small flock because they are extremely cold hardy- built for the cold actually with denser feather structure and metabolism for dealing with cold. One thing I have found in reading about them is that this breed really suffers in the heat, they start struggling in temperatures that stay above 80F for more than a few days. This maybe something to look into especially since your in Louisiana.

So I received a private message on Facebook from a concerned friend. I get something like this EVERY year. but this came from our local news channel about a warning for backyard chicken farmers. Any thoughts?
I know from working in public heath they have to do public press release when there is an increase in incidents of communicable disease. I think they try to remind people to use good hygiene practices when around poultry. It’s not something to freak out about. What we do is wash our hands after we have handled the chickens or done coop maintenance, we don’t wear our coop shoes in the house and I discourage my daughter from kissing them not just for illness but for safety reasons. What makes me cringe is when people say I’ve been around chickens all my life and never been sick, that is just giving a pass for being complacent. It’s like dealing with predators it’s not a problem till it’s a problem. That old saying an once if prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Hi! Everyone!! I am about 30 miles west of Syracuse. Live in a small country town. New to being a chicken tender but loving it!

Hello from Saratoga Springs NY! I am a backyard chicken keeper with a small flock of four. I have broodies with fertile eggs due next Tuesday so very excited here.
Hello and welcome. I’m in northern NY, Harrisville.
I have a pile of broodies, I finally let them have eggs. We ended up with 11 chicks, hatch this weekend. All went better than I could imagined. I did end up separating the serama because she started going after (viciously) the chicks that weren’t in her original clutch. The silkies don’t really seem to care about what chick belongs to who, if a chick rubs its chest it lifts up and lets it in.
