I have the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving that has a saurkraut recipe that is just about exact how I do it. I can make a copy if you would like it. I learned from my grandma, so I just make it from memory.

The only thing I do different is that I don't measure exact. I eyeball it. I put a layer of cabbage in the crock (2-3") then sprinkle a tablespoon of canning salt over it then keep alternating those steps until the crock is full, then pound the cabbage down til I get juice over the top. It takes quite a bit of arm muscle. DH and I take turns pounding. I have also put cheeseclothe on the cabbage under the plate, but I didn't this time around and it turned out good.

Hows everyone doing with the cold? Any casualties? Any frost bites?

What do you do to keep the chickens warm or from freezing?

Anyone considered hanging an "oil filled heater" from the rafters?

My birds are hanging in there... no problem, so far. My coop is insulated and well ventilated. No heat, though... The girls really don't seem to be bothered- they are still coming out in the snow and scratching around. I figure if they survived our record -21, they will be fine the rest of the winter! 50 days until spring!!!!

I wanted to say that the Fingerlakes Feather Club decided to hold a "swap" on May 7th. WE are looking into several sites, so will announce where & time when we know for sure.

Its an all and anything you want to sell. The free will be per car, probably $10. Set up & sell whatever you want, chickens, rabbits, equipment, plants, anything you want to get rid of.

The temps are going down tonight to the single digits. Last year I locked them in on the coldest days and I may do so again, though it may be to late for Nick and Uncle George. The others seem fine. I have my runs covered as you know. But the -'s were very hard.

My coop is not insulated but may be next summer.

As for the swap? remember I'm going to PA to pick up Orps from Hinkjc in May. Now we have the school across the street and they have a large parking lot. We are located just off 481 two minutes from the Kirkville road east exit so easy to get to from the thruway and 81 north and south. If you have a mind to contact them I think it would be and easy to get to location for everyone. If you want to contact the East Syracuse Minoa High School. They've held craft shows and antique car shows there in the past. It's always busy there. Just thought the location is good. I may not be there but others might find it helpful.
