At least we have 5 years! Does anyone process there own chickens?

I don't, since I don't eat meat, but if you ever want to be on my 'free rooster' list let me know since you are so close.

My last batch is already promised, but there are always more!

I don't even make money on eggs yet - I have a LOT of eggs but my coworkers are so used to the free ones I don't have the heart to sell any. Hope to sell some this summer to MAYBE pay for some feed.

How many chickens do you have? We were just delivered 15 rhode islands. They are so cute! I just got a name of a guy who processes them! I have been trying to get the word out there for eggs and meat to come. I guess the chicks have to be about 20 weeks right to start laying eggs.

20 weeks is a good "average"....but remember what an average is before you shoot the 25 week old that still isn't laying. Some will amaze you and lay at 17 weeks and others will be 8 months before they give you their first egg. I don't rightly know who old my D'uccles are....they had just started laying when I bought them and apparently they eat to many treats so they aren't laying any more. But they are a lot of fun to watch and talk to....and the eggs will come, I know they will.

Your d'uccles are from eggs I got at last year's chickenstock on October 3rd. They were set around October 5th and hatched October 26thish.

So that would be 26 weeks.

Woohoo..Now I know. Thanks Featherz. No WONDER they they aren't laying. They are just far to young. It really has nothing to do with my feeding them worms by the dozens and violets. WOW, they go NUTS for violets. Beleive it or not, they like the purple ones better than the white ones.

BTW, I can never remember what breed they are, so I am calling them "De'ants" LOL

I have heard this guy is very good.

Thanks Annie... I made a note of it, in case the one I think is a roo, is indeed a roo.

Just how many roos can you have in a 8x8 coop?

one is best - sorry. Stinkin' boys just can't get along usually. Although I do have a Red Cap mutt roo and a banty Cochin Roo that get along most of the time.
