Well it will for sure be something I haven't ever done. Growing up I watched my aunt take care of it, I don't think it should be super hard, but we will see when it comes time.I just got my first batch of chicks today and they are so stinken cute, that's the last thing I want to think about right now.

I know what you mean. We bought some Quail eggs, got 3/41 to hatch and they were supposed to be sold for meat. After holding the TWO that are left they are now in my DD bedroom in a parakeet cage.

Dinner, probably not.

Ya I hear ya!

I candled & think only one of them is going to make it.

Peafowl are not easy to hatch, from what I hear. Fortunately -- or maybe unfortunately -- 15 of the call duck eggs hubby still knows nothing about are developing nicely!!

That would be just my luck! Murphy's Law of Hatching in action!!!!

Nice! We buy kennel panels whenever we find a good deal on them. I like things to be modular. It's handy when you keep adding breeds & pens to go with them!

Liking the panel idea. The chain link is for the pen where the llama used to live. There is already 5' board fence up, just needed to put something more predator proof around it. Found a place selling used chain link at less than chicken wire.

The coop will be in the run in shed we had for the llama. (After some renovations of course). I found out we have a lot of mink around here, so the coop will have to be really done well.

Happy country hens

Good plan & great deal! We attach chicken wire to the lower half of the panels to keep critters from going through the fence. I'm surprised my husband hasn't run electrical wire & put barbed wire on top!

DH is going fishing this weekend, pike season opens, so no building. Oh well, it'll get done, it always does.
I was reading the meat bird section here, they sound rather, well, gross. Maybe I'd be better off getting a good dual purpose breed, straight run, and eating the cockrels when they turn into jerks?

Yup. Eating Jerky roos is a wonderful idea. Not to meantion it will allow you to keep the roos that are NICE and eat the mean ones. Something about eating a mean roo just tickles my funny bone. How big is your family? If you are not feeding 10 people at dinner the size of the bird is less important. (Roos are bigger than hens almost from the time of hatching) If you choose to order more babies in the future, straight run, it will allow you to add different genetic material to your flock....again, keeping the nicest looking, nicest temperment roo for the flock, and eating the mean ones.

Hahaha! Yep -- we've done that! Noah refers to them as "the evil ones." 3 splash Orp boys who went after everyone on the house at least once & had a vendetta for Noah. Poor kid. If there's a mean roo here, it especially hates him.

Thanks --- I'm glad they're getting their feathers back! That was one hard molt they went through.

one is best - sorry. Stinkin' boys just can't get along usually. Although I do have a Red Cap mutt roo and a banty Cochin Roo that get along most of the time.

I have two Dorking Roos in a 5x8 breeding pen with their girls & 2 Orpington Roos in another breeding pen with theirs. No prob. The "favorite" Orp girls are a bit worse for wear, if you catch my drift.

I could pull any of the Dorkings out tomorrow & put them in a show cage. Ahh -- except for Rex who lost his tail feathers wrestling with me during his NPIP test! At least now we can all tell them apart!

That said -- when we put all the boys in the bachelor pad, they all fight for dominance. I pulled the Orp boys to give the girls a rest. I would love to pull the Lav Ameraucana boy, but he's a nasty little bugger & picks fights. Since I plan on showing him & the white Amer rooster, I may have to build them little single pens. The Dorking boys are so gentle, they can be left with the girls all the time.

I have 2 buckeye roosters together, but they grew up together. Only once have i had to clean them up after a dominance issue. As long as bottom roo doesn't challenge......

I have around 8 Khaki Campbell ducklings (week old) from Holderreads available, thought I would post here before I CL them. 6.00 each.

I also have a few Runners available (also from Holderreads, three weeks old) 8.00 each, assorted colors (Code for I don't know what color they are yet!
