Thats what I do with the silkies when it gets hot. Ill spray/mist them down with cold water. They also like to lay on the cool wet ground after I mist/spray.

None of mine are panting....I SUPER glad I oriented the coop and run the way I did....they have shade all day....But I do think I'll put some Cool whip bowls in the freezer so I can put them in their waterer tomorow. Help keep them cool, cuz it's only gonna get hotter as the week goes on.

I just moved 3 silkies from the separation area to the roost and put 6 more chicks/juviniles into the separation area. Now I watch for signs of illness. I am hoping that I don't have any...BUT... with my luck lately I will have every single chick sick with cocci within the week. Why not...one of the tinest chicks is showing signs of wry neck...one died...sigh...I hope that the TSC guy wasn't lying about having medicated chick feed in 50 pound bags, cuz I'm gonna need it.

AND I forgot to go to TSC to get grower feed....I have to do that tomorrow or I will have 3 silkies with kidney problems.

Yes, TSC carries medicated food in 50# bags. The purina version of it is in the red bag. If they DO get cocci tho, you'll have to move to sulmet or corid - the medicated feed won't cure the cocci, just builds up resistance... have they been outside yet or is this something they came with?

I have pips on my BO eggs! I am going to be daring and try a few chicks under my broody. She's not at 21 days yet on her fake eggs (she broke the real ones) so it MAY not be successful. Just trying a FEW chicks, not the whole batch, in case she goes nuts and tries to hurt them.

We got a new barn cat yesterday - if anyone near me saw the ad on craigslist for someone trying to rehome a little scared barn cat, I decided to take him. Can always use more cats on the property. Poor thing is scared to death!

I had a group COME with cocci...(however you spell the rest of the disease) They are doing fine. About 6 weeks old now. They are, however in isolation, in a quickly built brooder. Itty bitty babies are waiting for me to clean the BIG brooder so they can zoom about. One of them is having a problem keeping head straight...and I don't mean mentally. LOL

Your girls are WONDERFUL and doing very well. They don't seem to mind the extra bodies on the roost last night and are happily running about eating everything they can find outside. You would think they didn't have access to food 24/7 the way they attack the ground when I let them out of the coop. They follow ray around the property when he has a shovel in his hand. Couldn't be that whenever he digs a hole he throws them worms, could it?

Thanks for the names of the medication for cocci....Next time I am in TSC I will pick some up to have on hand, cuz I just KNOW I'm gonna need it...

The mornings have been nice outside, before the sun has a chance to warm everything up. Tuesday is supposed to almost hit 90 degrees.

Yesterday almost all the birds were miserable. I had a sprinkler going, pans of cold water, watermelon, etc. They all dug into the dirt in the shade and were panting. They need to get acclimated before the REAL heat comes!

My leghorns and production reds that were around for the 100+ temps last year were all fine. They've found their spot under the bushes and weren't panting at all. Neither were my nine weekers in the new coop and oddly enough, the two broodies sitting in the old coop were also fine. I guess it's because they don't move much.

On a positive note, I managed to sneak two BO chicks under my 15-16 day broody who had been sitting on fake eggs and SO FAR she seems to be accepting the chicks. I have seven more sitting under an ecoglow and I may try to sneak those in too IF she seems amenable. My broody who hatched out two weeks ago is doing wonderful - one good thing with the hot weather is it's less work for the broodies!

Allow me to drop in with a question. Does anyone know this Rudy guy near Hamilton? I have these rosecomb bantam brwn. leghorns adn I've yet to find anyone who has them. I even posted to AL. where I have a friend who says they are shown down there but to no avail. There are plenty, it would seem , single comb variety but no rosecombs. I do have eggs in the bator that appear to be doing ok, but I would prefer to add some new birds to the line if I can.

I got these at the ALBC conference last year and they were donated by this Rudy guy. Apparently they aren't all that popular.
