NY chicken lover!!!!

WOO HOO everyone but the itty bitty chicks are in the COOP tonight. Tomorrow morning is gonna be a hoot....but I left the pop door open so they can get out and away from each other if they wake up before I do. (which they will, cuz I don't plan to open my eyes before 8 am) I am sooo excited to have the stink out of the back room.

The 3 surviving Amerucanas are in a 6 foot by 3 foot brooder. It is so large compared to their size I have to move the water and food to the side they are sleeping on or they get lost looking for their next meal.

How long are you supposed to give supplimental vitamins for wry neck? It's been 3 days and it hasn't gotten worse, so that is a good thing. But how much longer do I have to continue to catch the speedy lil' thing and drop extra vitamins on her beak?

I gave my wry neck chick vitamins 3 times a day for four days, twice a day for two days and then once a day for two days. By then it was cured and screamed and fought so I figured it was enough. That was two weeks ago and now I can't tell which one it is. I supplemented with scrambled egg and a lot of cuddling and special attention. It was separted into a cat carrier for five days so it wouldn't get trampled because it was smaller and skinnier than the others.

Last weekend they got separated into two stock tanks, one for the bigger ones and one for the smaller ones. They seem much happier with more room. No more heat lamp, just a little 15 watt night light and they are comfortable. They are in a spare bedroom and the house is warm enough for them.

Now I have to build a coop like a fortress because we have something outside strong enough to pull a full garbage can off the deck and unlock the lid. I was hoping it was a really big raccoon, but the tracks and scat say small bear. Kinda scary when I take the dog out before bed and the yard is dark. Hope I'm bigger than the bear (or faster than the dog)

Gabbard has them and they're the first. thank you so much. Have your ordered eggs from them at all. How are their birds. While i don't consider the bantams expensive the Blue orpington eggs are.

Thanks for the info. So about a week will probably do it? I'm on day 4 and it turned it's head the other direction this morning, so 3 more day, or so.... or until it turns it head freely. But not for the rest of it's life, which is wonderful news, cuz she is FAST and I am not.

I hope you are a good shot and have a gun with a slug big enough to take down a bear if it comes to that. I would hate to think of either you or the dog getting hurt. Have you considered taking a large flashlight to illuminate the darkness so you don't walk up on your large racoon unexpectedly? (hoping it's just a large coon with weird poo)

one thing i did notice is on website they are not listed under bantams section and have no pic but info. but they are listed under white/tinted egg layers with large and bantams together.

then on ebay they have them listed with just egg pic but they dont say if they are bantam or not. they have auction up right now 3 hours left or so

maybe you can email them and ask.

Finally went and got the materials to start building a coop. I got those foundation blocks that you mount a 4x4 in for the floor and those suckers weigh 50 pounds. It took me an hour each to dig a shallow hole to put crushed stone in and by then I was done in. Nothing but rocks, roots, and rock hard clay. Daughter said if anything digs under the coop to get a chicken they will deserve it

I was happy with the price at Home Depot and got a lot of 2x6, 2x4, 3/4 plywood for the floor and vinyl flooring. Hope it goes fast once I get the base leveled up and square. I plan on 8' by 12'. Right now I have 17 silkie chicks and no idea how many are roos, so I hope the coop is big enough for starting out.

Cass, my son-in-law lives 50 feet away and is obsessed with hunting. I'm sure he will shoot or trap the garbage thief soon. I see pretty good by moon or starlight and the dog will warn me if something is coming. Hope it's a coon because they are pretty tasty if you cook them right. Tastes like pork.
