What does the watermelon do? does it cool them down?

Well, I think it just excites them to have red food....but I find that they are panting a lot less after they have something cold in their belly. Since they can't sweat to cool their skin (or maybe they can but it doesn't evaporate due to the down coat they insist on wearing) they only way to cool their internal temp is by eating/drinking something cool. Or cozying up to a big block of ice, but not all of us have freezer space to make big blocks of ice for them.

So I go to *that store with low prices* and get a watermelon and put it on the top shelf of my fridge, which is the coldest place the way mine is set up, and serve them slivers of watermelon....which they fight over and run away with to eat in privacy. I do recommend not teasing them by holding it above their heads...not if you value your fingers, cuz they can jump WAY higher than you think they can. *putting pinched finger on ice*

I used to have 8, now have nearly 80

I never had 8. I went from zero to 20 in 2 weeks. Never stopped at 8.

Cass, We had Call Ducks. We went from Call Ducks to 14 Silkie Hens and 1 Rooster.
Now we have 22 Hens and 1 Rooster. Think we want ONE MORE Rooster. Regards, Aria

I wish I could come to your get together but we have a bunch of people coming to our house that weekend to go to the state fair.

We actually just moved to CNY from Williamstown, MA which is very close to Albany.

I think i fixed my location.

Hey "marquisella"? Are you Sue? I think the wheaten mother hen of my wheaten/white ameraucana was one of yours that Renee Bennett has? Anyway, he has Colombian markings and is really nice, but I can't keep him, know anyone who wants him? The Lavender AM chick I got from Renee is also a boy I think :-(

We would have told you to come on over here with us if your location was either in your signature line or under your av. Glad you found us without any help tho.

Hey Sue...are you still heading up the 4-H poultry club? I sent you a few emails and haven't heard anything since our last meating at Karen's house several months ago. Let me know what's going on...my kids have been looking forward to this club for a while now...we feel we are in the dark.

Thanks,

Meagan

Megan,

I've emailed you several times and also got not response. I thought you quit. I answered your email by hitting "reply" to your email a few weeks ago, and nothing. I don't know what is going on.

Email me again, and see if you get my reply. If not, we should talk on phone.

Sue and Meagan or any 4-H people,
If any 4-H kids are interested in working with Barnevelders, I would be happy to donate some. They are very friendly, even the roosters make very nice pets. Meagan, I was reading your BYC page, your story sounds similar to mine - 2009, "new" very old house, new chicken owner, 9 chickens.....2011 - nearly 100 chickens, working on my DH to get a bunny, have been considering alpacas and/or mini highlanders (because we do have land, why not fill it up!)

Donna, pretty much all my 4H kids parents are on this list, but I will pass it on, thanks.

Why not get a lot of animals? HHmmmm, its a lot of work, and you will never be able to go on a vacation because you won't find reliable people to take care of them....

I know, I've had rabbits, dogs, sheep, horses, chickens.....and even now, with just a few horses & the chickens, I hardly go anywhere for more than 3 days. I found a friend to help care for the herd this summer, but its the 1st time in years!

The last email I have from you is dated 4/7...a reminder that Rudy was giving a demo at the library.

My kids are really bummed they have missed out. We didn't quit. That wasn't an option. Both of my email accounts send notifications to my cell. I never miss an email. Just sent you another from my yahoo acct this time.

I hope it isn't too late this year for my munchkins to participate.

Meagan
