My chickens, kids and I are not complaining about the cooler weather. One of my kids said at supper tonight "I didn't have a drop of sweat all day." First day in a while anyone felt like eating a big supper. I should have done some baking, but was too busy cleaning brooders and critter cages while it was cool. Might do some baking later while doing laundry and watching movies with kiddos. Enjoy the cool while it lasts!

Welcome all! It was so nice to walk out to a cool morning. The herd was already up and about and the girls couldn't wait to get out of the coop. What a great start to the day!

How did everyone fare with this afternoon's storms? We had very little damage at the house - just a few downed branches and a momentary power flicker. My husband came through Stephentown at about 7:30, though, and said that there were several downed trees and limbs across power lines and so on.

I happened to be working out in the coop at the time (the Sussex are now in a pen in the coop so that everyone can check one another out through a barrier for a couple of days - thus far, they're all pretty "meh" about the situation), and so sat out the worst part of the storm with the girls. It is LOUD under that metal roof. My ears are still ringing!

I was working at a house in Old Chatham and it headed to Pittsfield with a fury. My Mom called me to see how things were home ( Mom lives next door) and said they were stranded in Pittsfield, 3 downed trees. Here in Canaan, the power only flicked a few times, well after the storm was gone. I got home, and the chickens didn't have a care in the world....other than "hey, got food?" The 2 Broody Sumatra's were out with their combined 11 chicks like nothing ever happened.

HIP HIP!!! THREE of my silkie roos are gone. I had to deliver 2 of them to a family south of me, cuz I was going to be out of town when she was going to have the car....and the boys that got them were THRILLED!!! So I know I did the right thing taking the hour, round trip, to deliver them.

BUT is there anything sadder than the remaining silkies looking out of the run for their flockmates? I almost cried when I got home and the 2 remaining silkies were just standing there looking up and down for the missing birds. I'm not sure that I should get rid of the last roo....well, I know I have to....but the ONE remaining silkie will be sooooo lonely. Does anyone close have a silkie hen they want to rehome? Maybe my silkie hen will bond with the D'uccles...they are about the same size...she will just have to learn to roost to keep warm.
