That is a great idea. I lost my Orpingtons and suspect that it may have been Mereks. No other birds have died, but the 25 youngest were vaccinated and the Ameraucanas are tough birds (thanks Renee). The 3 that Doris hatched out so far so good except the Rooster has had lameness issues for two weeks. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. The short story is that I have to be very careful about adding birds, visiting farms and trading birds or even sending them to auction. BTW I would have followed up on your Frizzle birds harder, but we were staring to have trouble with the Orpingtons at that time and I didn't know if it was a good idea.

I don't know what your flocks Merecks status is or if they are innoculated or immune, but I want to be open about what is going on here.

The happy part is that no more deaths and that one pen and one coop are predetor proof as much as humanly possible and the other coop is predetor resistent. Working on that part.

So nice to read your entrys - you are always entertaining and sincere. I know my spelling is bad, but I have no energy to correct it tonight.

Now that you mention it I hadn't considered the disease end of it. I haven't had any major problems though I will admit to losing the occasional bird. But for the hundreds I've had or hatched less than ten. Nothing that has affected a bunch of birds. Also most of what I have I've hatched myself and I don't buy at auctions. Thank the Lord.

However I never charge an arm and a leg for chicks either. The most I charge for have been my Dels. I am of course open to trades of other goods though. Jam, jellie , hay , straw, cheese, berries, apples , whatever. You never know unless you ask right? Anyhow it never hurts to check to see what I have in the spring. I do post to CL. I don't see myself supporting this hobby through the sales of chicks or eggs.

Take care and everyone be safe tonight with this rain.

Awww, that stinks!

I haven't vac'd anything here, I just don't do large enough hatches to make it cost effective? I did wonder though, do Vac'd birds "shed" the virus and are they a risk to unvac'd birds?

I drove to the feed store today in the hopes of finding smaller hole wire for my fencing. No luck there. Where on earth do people find hardwire cloth in taller rolls?

in the spring i would be looking for a few speckled sussex chicks.... i got 14 eggs shipping was evil on them got 1 to hatch and it was a roo OMG spent over $30 on that. so would like 2 pullets or some chicks.

in the spring i can trade eggs or chicks- i have a lav americana roo who will be over some mixed hatchery EEs and some mixed brown egg layers - i have assorted flock of BR, RIR, Black star, blue orp, and i have some young wyondottes, a wellsummer. I have some marans hoping to get a breeding pen of those going as well. I also have a young EE/dominique roo coming along and i can do a breeding pen with him in the spring.

have jap hatching eggs now- my daughter should have other variety breeding pens together in the spring.

I am open to trades too.... like now i am willing to trade things - i'm making gift baskets for christmas... so jams/jellies candles soaps would be all good.

Just traded 2 jap 4 wk old chicks and a splash frizzle jap roo for- a 50lb back of chick starter, a bag of layer feed, and a bale of shavings.

and i didn't have to spend gas money to go to the feed store.

I looked at that website that you all were talking about and wow 100-200 for an unsexed chick. for 100 i would expect a pullet. how would you even sell a roo that started off at 100?

well anyways, just my 2 cents worth.

I was going to check at Lowes tomorrow maybe? Shipping on rolls of wire is probably a small fortune, there will probably be vendors at the rabbit show in Syracuse that sell wire, but thats like the first week in Oct, I'll be nine months pregnant than and probably not capable of putting up a fence, lol (I'm probably not capable of putting up one now, but I am sure he'll see me out there doing it and have to go do it instead...)

I thought about just getting the heavier guage horse fence they have at TS and putting hardwire cloth on the bottom two feet? (plus the skirting) Since I can find it in the smaller rolls anyways. I also thought about putting chicken wire over the fencing? Then I could do the whole thing... (I can hear my husband now about how I just put a fence over a fence thats over a fence!)

I'm not holding my breath about him actually putting up electric fencing. Did I mention I had the boat sold and could have paid for my fencing? Only he won't sell it... Its been on the water ONCE in three years!

I'm probably going to run to the Poultry show in Bath on Sunday, a friend has some Cayugas I'm going to take a peek at.

If anyone is looking to trade something, this is what I need:

White SQ Silkie hens (I need two, they can be young pullets) Or a trio of Blacks, Lavs or Splits...

SQ Cayuga Drake (I want to swap out my drakes for an unrelated one, it can be young, I won't need it til spring)

SQ Black Ameraucana Rooster (Or Lavender)

I've got Buff ducks (three girls) to trade, Runner ducks (males and females and yeah, I stunted them.

) a White Silver Appleyard female duck and a young Cayuga duck from Holderreads (Its smallish)

I also have a Blue Ameraucana hen, I like the type on her, I do not like the feathering on her neck (I know, picky much?) She's a year old, and one of the only hens who was not broody this year, lol I will also have a Black hen once she hatches out her eggs.

I might have some Ameraucanas later in the fall, I have to hold onto some stuff to replace some of my hens.

I also have a nice SQ Jr SF doe and a Sr SF buck available.

Vaccinated birds can shed the virus and some vaccinated birds "don't take" and can contract and die from the virus. Some birds and/or lines are naturally resistant, so my goal is to have a resistant flock. There will surely be the occasional bird that succumes, but hopefully no whole flock losses.

I only found hardware cloth four foot wide (I'm pretty sure it was that wide) at TSC. I haven't seen any taller than that. It was hard enough to work with at that width, I can't imagine the struggle of handling anything bigger.

Hope I can get to the feed store today. Need fresh shavings to clean out the coop. School is closed today due to flooding.

Yes, they do.

Vaccinated Mareks birds will shed the virus and infect unvaccinated birds. So, if you don't vaccinate, ask before you purchase anything.

Here we go again. My basement is flooding for the second time. The runs are flooded and the coops will need cleaning out as the girls got them wet on the ends with their water. I am cut off right now as all the roads out are either washed out or flooded. Can we please send all this rain to texas? Ulster county has had enough. I am supposed to work today. Hope I can find a way out. My poor cheeps are mad at being locked up again. I do believe they are as stressed as I am. I keep giving them goodies to keep them occupied somewhat. I hope everyone else is doing okay. If I dont laugh I might cry.
