NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks! I made holes in some buckets (dear Liza, dear Liza) this morning. I made the holes about 3x3 I'd guess, maybe a little bigger. My chicks are still only about half the size they will be but holes can always be made bigger. This certainly works for now.

I made one as a feeder, so the bucket is upright with the lid on. I used that hateful feeder I bought to fill up some of the interior space that the birds can't reach anyway. At least it'll have some value that way. It fit in nicely. Since I was at it with the buckets and Dremmel, I made another bucket as a cover for the water dish I bought. It's a big dog bowl, really, that I can plug in in the winter, and an inverted 5 gallon bucket fits nicely over it. I cut a few holes at the height of the lip of the bowl, and space for the cord to fit through, and now there should be less risk of bedding and droppings ending up in the water.

Now I'm finally happy with both feeder and waterer for the long term, and it all came from free frosting buckets from Wegmans and free advice from the cool folks at BYC!

Anyone else at the Fiber Arts Fest in Hemlock this weekend? This was my first time there, and I really enjoyed it. Not a chicken-related event, but there were some great animals for sale and demonstration there in the form of goats and sheep. Now I kinda want a goat. Or at least an angora bunny.

Does NB hatch out their own stuff from their own hens? I thought they might buy their eggs, could be wrong tho!

I just sent a cull from the breeding Ameraucana pen to the auction for laying too green an egg, shoot, ya could have had her. She was a cull for type though (type first, then color! lol) since I didn't like her neck feathers. Paired her up with a "Roo" I had been trying to give away for free for weeks, who turned out to not be a Roo but a pullet with a really bad comb!

Not a whole lot at the Bath auction I was into buying. Prices were dirt cheap too, I did see some Delaware chicks though. I was on the hunt for a couple white silkie hens, but I didn't see anything I liked. Or it came with a Roo and I had some already, lol

I was feeling kinda crampy because I had overdone it packing for the auction (I guess eight month preggers women shouldn;t chase down ducks or lift 50' of wire into their car? :O ) Plus like every kind of wildlife tried to kill itself on the way there at 3am! It was like deer deer, COW (Yes, really, a COW in the road at 3am, and a Black cow too!) Then I almost hit a white skunk and finally a cat! I did have to have someone jump my car when the auction was over, our auto club "couldn't find anyone to service me" in Bath. Is Bath like the end of the earth or something?

Picked up my roll of wire today at TS, so hopefully my husband will get that up this week before something else gets eaten or it snows!

I know that it is probably starting to get late in the year but have a friend looking for animal auctions in the Syracuse area. They are looking for meat animals (chickens, goats etc). He said someone told him there is one in Chittenango but I have never heard of one out there. I know there used to be the one out in Bport that is no longer there. Any ideas? Thanks....

It's great here - all us cool NY'ers. Ok well some are cool, my chickens think I'm cool. They run to me whenever they see me. Or, maybe it's the treats.

ha ha... You would think that with chickens knowing who feeds and loves on them would actually turn tricks ... I wonder if we can teach a chicken to shake or give high three ?

I USE A BRINSEA OCTOGON 20 WITH AUTO TURN (sorry caps on)

I have the Genesis 1588. Works fine for me.

VMDANIEL -- It seems they molt when they feel like it. I wouldn't worry they have time to "recoat". I would increase their protein levels as much as you can. Do not supply extra lighting either. This will give them time to rest and reduce egg production. Energy will be diverted to making feathers.

Hope everyone is fine,

rancher
