Thanks! I made holes in some buckets (dear Liza, dear Liza) this morning. I made the holes about 3x3 I'd guess, maybe a little bigger. My chicks are still only about half the size they will be but holes can always be made bigger. This certainly works for now.
I made one as a feeder, so the bucket is upright with the lid on. I used that hateful feeder I bought to fill up some of the interior space that the birds can't reach anyway. At least it'll have some value that way. It fit in nicely. Since I was at it with the buckets and Dremmel, I made another bucket as a cover for the water dish I bought. It's a big dog bowl, really, that I can plug in in the winter, and an inverted 5 gallon bucket fits nicely over it. I cut a few holes at the height of the lip of the bowl, and space for the cord to fit through, and now there should be less risk of bedding and droppings ending up in the water.
Now I'm finally happy with both feeder and waterer for the long term, and it all came from free frosting buckets from Wegmans and free advice from the cool folks at BYC!
Anyone else at the Fiber Arts Fest in Hemlock this weekend? This was my first time there, and I really enjoyed it. Not a chicken-related event, but there were some great animals for sale and demonstration there in the form of goats and sheep. Now I kinda want a goat. Or at least an angora bunny.
