Sooooo...has anyone ever had a chicken "growl" at them? I had a Silkie in the nesting box for a couple of days now. I touched her (just to make sure she seemed alright) a couple of times and she pecked me, so I assumed she was sitting on eggs. I wanted to see what she had going, so I tried to move her yesterday. She growled at me! No question about it. It was a growl!

Could be ear mites. Have you wormed your birds lately. Spring and Fall are good time. Exprinex pour on. Just like Frontline dog stuff goes on. Do all your birds. Dust everyone with DE on occasion too.

Hows your ventilation? DO NOT shut things up tight. Watch your humidity. Walmart has a temp , humidity cheaply enough. Moisture is a bad thing with chickens. Keep it dry. If you use deep litter make sure you keep adding wood chips to keep things dry. If you can smell ammonia dump some more litter or do a quick cleaning just getting most of the old stuff out and add new.

I suspect winter is the worst time for chickens due to over zealous owners.

Snow here too. Darn.

I've got silkies now. Do they roost? They are by themselves , him and her, BBS's. Will she be able to get in the nest box? I don't think she'll lay for awhile, it's too cold.

Lord have mercy if I was a hen you wouldn't get and egg until the temps were 80*. I caught one once dragging a space heater into the coop.

Ok 87 grams I think is the correct unit of measurement.

At five pounds there should have been more than two yolks.........

Yah my DH was nice enough to run electric out to the two coops that are waaay out there. My far out coop even has lights and a security camera. My coop that somehow ended up next to my driveway just uses an extension cord.

I do have backup rubber bowls just in case, tho - those are great when you have to knock ice out of them! I still have to tote water out twice a day tho if I don't let them free range - they go through water quick. Still have my nipple waterers up also in one coop, will keep those in until the weather gets just a tad colder.

My ladies are laying pretty well still - my production reds seem to be molting one at a time and my leghorns haven't decided to molt yet.. and my April pullets are all kicking into high gear. I think I got 20 eggs yesterday! (I have 43 girls, but some are just youngsters and some are obviously molting).

You need to get them on an antibiotic asap. This weather is bad for respiratory problems. They have Tylan in powder form for water.

The DW is getting some tylan 200 today and after a lil research im gonna give all the girls a .5 cc shot in the breast and then repeat 48hrs later, does anyone know how long after useing the tylan i should wait to worm? also i was wondering which wormer i should use ive read good things about zimecterin gold horse wormer paste put a pea size amount in each hens mouth and also safeguard (fenbendazole) anyone have experence with these or have any recomended wormers? this is really bad timeing for all this cause i got two pair of gambel quail on there way! ive also got the show bird barn on lock down! i pray the tylan does the trick
