NY chicken lover!!!!

I had the heated chicken waterers up for about a week, but just got the goat / sheep buckets up this weekend. No really sure what we are going to do for the ducks. Any ideas?

Our broody Silkie (Mama Bear) has hatched four babies now. (One did not make it past the first day

). Just found another one in the nesting box this morning!

hmmm, is the little one ok or not? The one you just found?
Oh, boy! My little one is up...let the fun begin!

I hunted squirrels for many years. I use a 22 and that works well. A pellet gun with comprable size pellet to a 22 also works well (have one of those as well!). Squirrel is very tasty. The biggest pain in the butt is skinning them as their skin is very loose (enabling them to turn and bite). They can be challenging to hunt but a whole lot of fun. I dont get many violaters in my yard any more. The word is out that trespassers will be eaten!

squirrel ia very good. I suppose at close range a pellet gun would work. I've always used a .22

I do. Squirrel is very good, as others have mentioned. The season for squirrel in NY runs from September 1st - February 29th (except on Long Island) for grey squirrel. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/29460.html
Red
squirrel may be harvested at any time with no limit as long as you have a valid NYS small game hunting license. Red squirrels are smaller and sometimes have a slightly more gamey flavor because they often feed heavily on pine.

This page will get you started out:
http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/hunting.html

As of, I think, two? years ago, an air gun is now a legal weapon to harvest small game (technically it was illegal before). It is defined as:
Air gun—a firearm that uses spring or
compressed air (not gunpowder) to propel a
single projectile that is .17 caliber or larger and
produces a muzzle velocity of at least 600 feet
per second. You may use a smooth or rifled bore.

So, your 1200 fps airgun will be okay. They will do the job if you are pretty close and get a solid head or chest shot. Otherwise, a .22 rifle is an excellent squirrel gun (make sure to always shoot with a 'backstop' or something behind the squirrel... and not just in the treetops, as a .22 bullet can travel over a mile if you miss!). I also use a shotgun with field loads in one area that I hunt, as the landowner requested that we not use rifles.

To skin a squirrel, this is generally the best method unless you intend to save the hide for tanning/mounting: **WARNING, graphic content of skinning** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dekMT72WcE&feature=youtu.be

If
you have any questions feel free to let me know and I'll help the best I can! I used to work with the NYS DEC.

Our ducks do not have a water heater. I do not want to use a cookie tin heater-too much chance for water inside it, they are messy lil things, I do not have a water source close by their coop (about 200ft away) so I am not carrying large quantities just for them. I looked for a shallow heated bucket but can't find one. We have small ducks, 4 pairs-Woodies, Mandarins, BEI's & Pintails. Any ideas anyone?

You do not have a Pond? We always kept a pond open and our Ducks swam all day even Winter. We had to drive them in in the evening.

We have a round electric heater we place in the Pond. It works great. It kept a small area for them to swim and while they swam they opened more of the Pond. We also have Fish in the Pond. And we learned that Fish need AIR in Winter too. Reasons to keep the Pond open.

We now use the round electric heater in the Pond for our Fish. We now have Silkie Chickens.
And we have water heaters. One old type cylinder that fits in the hanging 5 gallon wate bucket and one that fits under the other water heater. Hope this helps. Aria

Amy, have you ever made your own kefir? Or would you be interested? I have some kefir grains I could share......
Ginny

I haven't, but I'd love to give it a try!

It was so funny when your husband came to pick up the eggs. We were joking that it must look REALLY bad to have a pharmacist out in the parking lot exchanging a bag for folded cash.

I told my staff I was dealing eggs.

And not just any eggs....freshly "laid in the USA" eggs! The best kind!!I probably looks more suspicious because of where your store is located. I hope the pick up was convenient for you. It was extremely convenient for me. thanks again!!
