Sorry you have to cull. If I were closer, I would be glad to help you out...we are rationing eggs now. The past 4 days or so we got 3 eggs a day...today we got 6!!

It is pouring rain here too, no snow in sight! I can definitely wait on the snow.

I hope all my Christmas day chicks finish hatching by the time my NYD chicks start! I just ordered 25 Cornish rock from Ideal, sale on leftovers for tomorrow's hatch. Gonna be chick central here. Hope some of the big girls start laying soon.

They don't recover from those diseases? I will have to research them, cuz I remember a meantion of them a long time ago, but forget what I read.

Most do recover, and even better they become immune after they've had it. Dry pox, especially - that's really common, just shows up as a few scars and then goes away.. The wet pox, however, has a much higher mortality rate since the sores can close up the trachea. My poor girl has a pox head, but she's also got some really bad mouth lesions, making it hard for her to breathe. I have held off and am trying a few things, but I don't want her to suffer.

Yeah, I just read up on it. Yucky. Your poor pullet. I hope she makes it so you don't have to "do the deed".

Oh the things I have to look forward to. And I have a pond in the back yard....talk about bugs.

Heavy rain here. Came home to have to run around closing up coops in the dark and the rain. Thank goodness for rubber boots and umbrellas. My back yard is a pond right now. Hope it stops soon. Still no eggs.

My cheeps got the dry pox late summer/early fall. Didnt really know what it was at the time as it was just a few lesions on the tips of some of the combs. Had to do a lot of reading to decide that that was it. All my cheeps recovered thankfully.

Hope no one has any flooding tonight (including me!).

I have a pair of long-bladed hedge loppers bought specifically to do the deed what the time comes, but fortunately have not had to break them out yet.

Good news! My DH called me at work to tell me Blue Boy had turned up in the coop when he went to close up. He looked like he had gotten into a fight with another bird. I'm just happy he's home.
