I hate ice more.

Bitter cold here and windy, but no snow, so far. Chickens are outside. What's with that? They have a perfectly warm, windproof coop. Are they all warm inside it? Nope. They are outside picking at the grass and weeds. You'd think I never fed them.

Mine too. Outside foraging around with their feathers blown right backwards. It's 29 here and VERY windy. Have had to knock the top layer of ice free on the waterers and the ducks basin is slush! Brrrr....

Windy, cold here...snow blowing in the coops so I guess they aren't too air tight! LOL
Snowdrifts to walk through. Chickens locked up, chicks in brooder are warm & toasty...

Such a cold and nasty night, and such a great night inside!! Got our first pip from the nine eggs in the bator and my son found two baby Zebra Finches in the nest this afternoon!

He cometh and freezeth all my waterers! I think I'm going to try and make two of those DIY water heaters with the cookie tin and the light bulb. Any of you folks make them?

Tab's chicken obsession :

Good news! My DH called me at work to tell me Blue Boy had turned up in the coop when he went to close up. He looked like he had gotten into a fight with another bird. I'm just happy he's home.

So happy bb came back!! I hope he is ok!

One of my Orps is showing broody tendencies. She has been spending ages in one of the nest boxes (the FAVORITE box that everyone just has to use, never mind that there are eight other boxes from which to choose) cooing and chirping to herself, hissing at the other pullets, and occasionally lifting herself to tend nonexistent eggs. I went out to check on them a few minutes ago and found her sleeping in the nest box on an egg she must have laid late this afternoon. As I'm a mean, evil keeper, I turfed her out of the box and stuck her fluffy butt up on the roost, and took the egg. If she wants to be a mom in a few months, I'll be happy to set some eggs under her, but right now? Not. happening.

I actually have 4, yes FOUR, of them. Wow, love it! No frozen water, ever. We have used them for 4 years now, same ones. Here is the link.

I don't feel as bad not getting up at 6am and letting them out on the weekends knowing they still can get a drink. On the absolute coldest days there was a tiny ring of ice on the edge of the water. Never use anything higher than a 40W bulb. That wattage works fine. Good luck!
