NY chicken lover!!!!

I have tried oatmeal before and mine don't seem to like it....mixed it with kefir that they love, but they still stuck their beaks up at oatmeal. oh well, I tried....

mine all like oatmeal.

vmdanielsen, with the new forum you need to re subscribe. I actually had to subscribe several times before I started getting notifications.

So the divas came out of their coop today. I gave them some melon rinds and put some bananas and oatmeal and kefir in them. They seemed to like that. They are now busy destroying the red cabbage I threw out into the run a few minutes ago. Its up to 13 now, was 2 when I got up. I hope they start laying soon cause it stinks buying eggs at the grocery store! I heard an egg song from the silkie pen but I am not holding my breath. They dont seem to mind the cold or wind and always come out, even when the laying hens wont. Anyways, I hope your joints arent giving you too much grief Rancher. I know this cold is bothering me. Hey Henicillin....they are boys. Thats all they think about besides food!

Hoping it warms up enough to melt the snow and ice in my yard. I skate gingerly in my boots to and from the coups, hoping like crazy I dont fall. If I fell in the coop, I am quite sure there would be nothing left but bones for anyone to find! Stay warm everyone. I am off to push pills for the man.

Link says "out of stock" or some such, but if you search on that site it brings you to several "heated dog bowls"....all of which are about 10 bucks cheaper than the one I got. Nice.

Oops! I'm sorry. It was in stock last night, maybe someone bought the last of them? It's one of these: http://www.alliedprecision.com/pet-products.html I have one of the blue 50W models and it's really sturdy, and I like that I can take the base off to clean the bowl. I'm sure with some searching online you can get them for a good price, mine was $18 with shipping.

We have been using a 5 gallon plastic pail with nipples. My husband has an antique
cylindar electric heater in the pail.

And the regular waterer he added an automobile heater that has a magnic and stays on the bottom.(on the outside of the waterer) This is our second Winter and it has been minus 12
here in Sauquoit, NY.

Rancher....your coop is neat. Regards, Aria

Never tried oatmeal do you give it to them just uncooked oats or cooked mushy and cold?? Mine get mainly bread as treats and worms. The girls steal my worms for composting to feed the girls.
I have a heated hanging poultry waterer hubby found on sale from a co-workers neighbor was selling since she got ride of all her birds.

Cooked mushy and hot/warm (not too hot, but warm). :)

I will have to try that tonight or tomorrow. They got a big bowl full of my worms this morning already. I need to find something cause I am going to be out of composting worms before spring.

I am making one of my raised beds just for chicken treats this spring so we will have treats all year next year.

good god it's cold out! 2 duck eggs and a white leghorn egg so far this morning. Had 3 duck eggs yesterday and a dozen mixed chicken eggs. Some leghorn, RIR, EE's and Sumatra.

Your short term memory is shot....last year we had had a dozen days this cold by this time of the season. Now it's gonna warm up and the coops are gonna be a MESS!!!

Not mine, I just throw some BOSS in there and let em stir it up for me! mmmm.. spring compost! :p Unfortunately looks like not much warmth before getting cold again. I'd like it to stay about 30-40. That's about right for me - minimal bugs, chickens are happy, grass is green. :p Weather keeps going back and forth between snow and rain here tomorrow.

Did you guys see that other thread with a hatchery in seneca falls? Tempting if I ever needed started chickens (like if something happened to my flock), but that's a big drive! :)

ohh, I remember. We also had 26 inches of snow on the ground here. It was 8 below zero this morning. That's just cold....
