NY chicken lover!!!!

We have about 40 hens also, getting 8-12 eggs a day. 8 or so of them are over 5 years old. Good girls are trying hard. Glad this weather will be warming up. Calling for freezing rain in our area, nothing yet.

Wanting to go to the Mt Hope, OH Alternative Animal Auction at the end of March. Really neat things there but it is a 9 hours drive and I would need to take 2 1/2 days off from work. I don't take time off. 5 years and MAYBE 3 days that I have taken off. Ugh.

Good Morning! I am taking a road trip to the Rexford (Albany) area on Thurs. I am looking for a few different kinds of eggs...blk orp, buckeye, olive layer I guess anything.. A friend on Christmas day had something get her chickens...she is looking for different kinds. I have Light/Coronation eggs I can trade or I will by them ... I am looking for just six or so..Thanks!

Isn't it warm out there! What a nice thing...tho I don't want the snow to melt. My Sussex are dirty looking..

Have a great day!

Rancher, How old is too old? We have 16 Silkie Hens and we are getting 6 to 9 eggs daily.
MORE than we use. Will take them to the office. They love them. Regards, Aria

I have 6 ladies and get 4-6 eggs a day. Although they are't even 1 yet so. Although I think my jersey is an Australorp not a heresy. Going to get a better look today.

We have 8 days or so till our eggs should hatch the kids can't wait. I am making my brooder this weekend and if the weather holds hubby is starting my new coop this weekend to.

Aria - Too old to lift those bags of pellets or carry wood.

I'm at the "out" age. Where it either wears out, falls out, or spreads out. I'm on a "low fat" diet. The fats hangin lower everyday.

Now Cass I told you I don't spoil my girls and I don't but here is today's lunch wagon. One pan for each coop. It's got bread and skim milk, scratch, layer pellets and lettuce. I also tossed in some grit just so they don't get any problems with their crops. I get the bread cheap at the bread store and the milk is out of date stuff and outer leaves of the lettuce from the school.

If you have an outlet store for bread in your area see if they will sell you "bird bread". It's the stuff they take back from the stores. I hate to say it but it's usually better than the stuff we can afford for the house. Whole grain and all that. I get maybe 4 or 5 loaves in a bag for $1.25. Then I put it in the freeze till I need it. I usually don't give them more than one loaf for all the birds.

The weather here is nice today but Lord help us tomorrow. I hope the chickens enjoy it while it lasts. I let the orps out of the run today.

Love - what have you got in the incubator? I hope they're all pullets.

Quail, coturnix, good for eating in just 6 - 8 weeks. The eggs are tasty too, supposedly no bad cholesterol, and they make the cutest little boiled or deviled eggs to take to church dinners. Kids love having a panful fried sunnyside up in the morning 12 or so fit in the small cast iron skillet.

Have you got any pics of quail cooked and pics of the eggs?

I have a mix, 13 ee, 2 longhorn/ee mix and a sussex/ee(I think) mix. We will keep the row for meat, even if they are small. We are adding a meat flock this year, mainly jersey giants and buff or fps in that flock.
