NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a mix, 13 ee, 2 longhorn/ee mix and a sussex/ee(I think) mix. We will keep the row for meat, even if they are small. We are adding a meat flock this year, mainly jersey giants and buff or fps in that flock.

Welcome to the NY thread! DH likes snowmobiling in your area often!

Love the EE's, great layers of pretty eggs. Jersey Giants are slow growing but I've heard they are a fine meat bird. Good luck!

I have to get some pics. I usually use my cell phone because I can easily get those pics onto the computer, but my cell phone just went on the fritz today.

I have even blown some eggs for decorating. Takes a gentle touch! My quail lay cream or blueish green eggs mottled with dark brown spots. One lays what we call the rainbow egg, Green on one end, cream on the other and various shades in between, with very light mottling. Those I gently scrub off the spots before blowing out the egg to cook, and plan to simply coat with something like ModPodge to make them shiny.

We are hoping for slow growing but good. We want to be able to control our flock size and breed our own instead of buying them each year.

As long as you can process your own you'll do fine. I have Delaware and Orps of various colors and BRs. I'm working on fatter Delawares. It's the roos that present a problem for most. Processing our own. Not something I can do.

Do you have an incubator? I think many hatch and grow out during the summer and then process and freeze for the fall. Something I'd like to do but not until I get meatier a Dual Purpose line.

I'm trying to get a set up to raise chicks all during the year. Some hens go broody at the most inconvenient times.

So I'm working on a broody coop for just that reason.

Well have a good night,

My yard is full of ice and mushy slush. Chickens wanted out but were slipping and sliding around. I wish we'd get one day of 50 and raining to at least wash away the ice. Then it can snow again. :p

We have an incubator I have some in there now. I have a place for my broody hens but none of mine have yet, course I have no roos yet too, I have a brooder box, and I will have a meat bird house. We started it just not done. I am bring to figure out where to have my roe's live, not sure I want them full time int he hen house plus some of my hens are breeds other then my hens will be. I also have a turkey pen and a separate but large area for them to be in so they will be free ranged(on just over an acre totally fenced in) but not with my chickens who are free ranged but can't get in the fence. I might have to fence an acres off for the chickens but for now they have the rest of the 4 acres to room. I am losing an acre or so to my garden this spring so that will cut them back some, then we are adding a play area for the kids but still have a good 1-2 acres for the chickens to roam.

Wow hope that make sense. I was up most of the night with sick kids and my coffee supply is low today.

yes Love - it does make sense. You've seen my hoop coop though I can't take credit for it's design. That would go to Trylin. Easy to build. If you need a good rooster let me know what kind you need or would like. I gave away an Lavender Ameraucana one year. I've got four Birchen Maran coming up. Might give you some nice Olive eggers.

Feather - don't mind the ice as there are parts of the yard that have grass. To much mud though and I'm trying to figure out how to block that area off and plant some grass. Ugh!

I'm with you Tab and I won't lie to say I haven't prayed for no snow. Yes I know we need the snow for water but it's so wet here I should have gotten Ducks! I could use a little dry. While the Good Lord hasn't seen fit to not let any snow fall He's been good so far.

Take care, gotta make dinner later,

PHEW!!! I am so glad that you are going to give us a "heads up" on the date for snowmaggedon, cuz I have clients that don't have much food in the house, so I will need to go shopping for them QUICK!!!
