NY chicken lover!!!!

great pictures every body! I miss the chatter that we had before the change over. I have tried to get the posts to come to my emails, but I can never make it work.

On the bright side, Sunday, I drove to Rome ny to get hatching eggs, from Tabitha(tab's chicken obsession) and Travis(admhotel). It was an uneventful 4 hour drive (2hours one way, listened to a John Grisham novel on cd. The DRIVING was uneventful, the TRIP was lots of fun, getting to meet more bycers! I set 29 eggs when I got home. Hatch season is here!!!
Thanks Tab and Travis

I was just about to ask who was setting eggs. I'm expecting eggs in the mail from GA and saving some of my Del and EE eggs for hatching. The eggs are expected to arrive tomorrow so tonight will be set up. I do hope at least 1/2 of the eggs coming hatch.

I am seriously debating ordering chicks after this year, cuz I can be guaranteed pullets and not have to deal with roos.

The chicks I have from the Auction site are at least 1/2 roos and quite frankly not that good. Major disappointment. I contacted the breeder and he wants me to send the crooked toed and mis feathered birds back. He will refund my money but I've fed these chicks for 6 wks and I'm on a fixed income and can not afford to send them back even if he refunds the shipping cost. Not to mention I have no box to send them back.

One I'm sure is not even a SFH but an EE! Not the same color as the rest and has a rosecomb.

Well gotta clean the other coop today, so take care and enjoy the weather. Mud city here. Ugh!

We will be setting eggs from our hens (Chantecler, Australorp and D'Uccle) on Feb 8th. Started collecting yesterday. The Chanties and BA's lay well, the D'Uccles are well, slackers. Hatched them last spring, there are 7 pullets and 1 Roo and I get MAYBE 1 egg every few days. UGH! Chihuahuas of the chicken world. DD that is almost 9 loves them.

Rancher - have you thought about trading eggs? I just signed up for the February Swap. I figure if I do not want the breed I get I can sell them and use the money towards what I want. I am in for 2 swaps this time, first one of the year!

Puxatony Phil says more winter. As long as winter is what is has been I'll be fine with it!

while i like Chants, I just have to many breeds right now. The only ones separate are the Dels. I'm working on two new half hoops.

Del,orps,(lav, buff, blk and bbs) brs, ee, sfh, maran, I also have some strays, in hens, RIR , Friz, SLW, and a lav amer roo.

Got the BR's last late summer and Lord have mercy I might get an egg every 3 or 4 days. Can't wait to see if they pick up.

Like I said I'm getting tired of dealing with roos. I don't process them so feeding them is a pain.

I will trade the lav roo for something if anyone is interested. Doesn't have to be chickens either. I have a pair of Blk orp roos and I would rather use them.

I also have some Birchen Marans roos that have some "red" in them and they are free. As much as I hate to give them away, no sense keeping them.

I have an EE that was supposed to be a SFH, at least I suspect it's an EE and if someone will take him and cull him for me I'll give you six Del eggs to hatch. He has crooked toes and is no good to me. At least I think it's a roo.

Everyone seems to have more than one breed. For us it is much easier to have ONE breed.
Since we have the one barn. We both work so it is easier to have it SIMPLE. I don't think there would be room for more chickens.

My husband think he may be hatching some of our eggs? I don't do that...so it is what he wants to do. Fine with me.

We purchased eggs ONE time from My Pet Chicken and NONE hatched. Won't do that again.
I am going to post the inside of our Barn. You will note NOT too much more room for more.

You might want to post a general location so we all have some idea where each of us are? I am sure we can get you some hatching eggs. We are NYers after all.

Have you a picture of your barn? All sides would be nice, I have an idea.

I note that your tag mentions Silkies, is that what you have? You are aware that Silkies are NOT real chickens right? They are aliens from another planet. That's why they don't look like other chickens. I had some and got tired of the "green glow" coming from the coop at night.

I'm with Rancher. Silkies are not real chickens, they are hatching machines. I had one go broody in the sand in the bottom of my coop, sitting on NOTHING but the nest she made in the sand. I let her hatch eggs ON THE FLOOR...she didn't care, she just sat there for 28 days (hey, didn't say they were GOOD Eggs) and got ONE chick for her efforts....poor chicky momma....

I do wish she would start laying again...Heck I wish ANYONE would start laying again....but I do miss her light tan/pinkish eggs daily. She was my most reliable layer before she went broody.

I have eggs brewing right now for the V-Day hatch. I set 24 blue eggs (americauna and EE) from hot2pot and threw in a few of my own - had to toss two oozers and four clears.. two are questionable.. so 23 are developing well! =)
