NY chicken lover!!!!

Well gave up on my eggs. Hoping to get more monday though to try again.

The ladies have started giving me 3 eggs a day instead of 6(6 hens). Although a friend just lost all but 1 of her hens so I might give her two of mine. We aren't sure what got them but they have been gone over 24 hours no real sign of foul play but who knows.

Lost ALL my subscribtions. Sigh. I thought this revision was going to be BETTER!

Well, I found you all and resubscribed, so hopefully I will be around more.

Yesterday was interesting. Busy making chili for Toggenburg's Fun Day on Saturday, and had to get ready for skiing, so hurried to the pen to put the girls away. Three RIR and one BR hopped right in for a treat. One red girl and Stewpot the nonconformist BR were still out. When I grabbed Stewie I could see that she had blood on her comb. Uh oh. So I decided that she needed a vacation from the bullies, and they from her different ways. Picture me all decked out to ski with Stewie under my arm trying to unfold and set up a giant dog crate in the basement. It was kind of like Lucille Ball, but I finally got her set up, rounded up the other red girl and got to the mt. At dinner time I called home to tell DH that there was a girl in the basement. He is the sweetest man, he was actually concerned for Stewie and only a little concerned about how long she would be vacationing with us.
Today with more time I noticed another bigger scab, so put antibiotic ointment on her comb. I had been impressed about how quiet she had been, but when I was doing some work near her she started making some soft sounds, and when Bella our Newfoundland came in to spend time, her quiet vocalizations increased in frequency. Bella lay down next to the crate and stayed there for a while even after I came upstairs. Stewie continued to make some soft sounds while alone until I turned out the light.
Can anyone interpret or guide me in chicken knowledge? I have read about blue stuff to put on them to minimize more pecking, would the feed store have that? Or Tractor Supply...I figure to reintegrate her with the rest while they are outside.
Bella and she were cute.

Blue-kote is available at Tractor Supply and it's wonderful stuff....ask my purple polka dotted flock....but NO picking....however, as Happyhensny says, IT STAINS....big time. DO NOT wear anything you care about cuz that is where it will land.

I got it on my hands the day before a wedding and had to bleach my hands (thank you Clorox 2) to get the spots off. My other choice was to go out of town for 4 days with a rooster's butt oozing blood. A no brainer in my mind, so I sprayed away and then the rooster shook his butt. And I was just trying to help. LOL Fortunately I had on OLD clothes, so my hands were the only thing I had to bleach.

Blue-kote has some slight antibiotic properties, so it is wonderful on small wounds....If you don't want to spray it on, spray it on a cotton ball or q-tip and dab it on the red spot.

3T olive oil
large chopped onion
4 oz parmeson cheese
1 bag spinash
15 ox ricotta cheese
4 eggs (save 1 for crust
1 C cheddar cheese, grated
pice crust with top (I think it means pierce)
salt & pepper to taste

Saute onions in oil. Cook spinach until limp. Mix everything together and pour into pie crust and top and bake 40 minutes at 425.

Spinach pie. DW uses store bought crust I think. One for bottom and one for top.

Ta, dah!

This sounds so delicious!!!!

I am sorry for your loss or your friends loss. You really need to investigate what happened.

Country Max is having a sale on wood chips.

Also going to have a sale on Layer Crumbles. $12.99 I prefer pellets and wonder about OP's on whether it's worth the $1.00 to buy crumbles. ???? I get the pellets for $13.90 there.

Rancher thanks for the offer. I don't think I have enough space for more Chickens,.Did you see the photo I posted?

Happycountryhens...thanks. I do think our Silkies are happy. Aria

Tonight is the night. Stewie has been a well behaved guest in the basement, but tonight she goes out to roost with her own kind. And I will get up early to watch the reintegration...

As far as her bloody comb, I had put the antibiotic cream we had in the medicine cabinet on a couple of times, and she has healed up. Next trip to TSC I plan to get some Blue Kote to have on hand for future emergencies. Thank you all for the info.

Rancher, I don't have any snow, but Toggenburg has quite a bit of the stuff they made. It isnt really like snow, more like frozen granular, or corn snow. But skiers are desperate people this year and are out there making use of it.

On a good day the six girls are giving me 4 eggs. Apparently Stewie is not contributing, as there have been no eggs in the basement, and I had a day with 4 eggs from the other 5...I hope things will be better for her.

Aria - I did see the pic and they all look very happy. I do like Silkies to some degree, but don't have the time to devote to cleaning and care. It's to wet here for fuzzy legged creatures. I've been accused of spoiling the ones I have and I know it would be more so if I had silkies.

When you build a second coop let me know. I expect by then I'll have orps to hatch and Br's. The incu is full as I can get it. Chicks due the end of the month.

Glass - I have a BBS orp hen who needs the Blue Kote. She's so picked on I think or well liked by the boys.

Now I have to share that I wormed everyone last night. Every one. I go to the coops at night with a head light on and in the dark it makes it easy to administer the Exprinex with an eye dropper.

My hoop coop has a roost where they all line up in a row. I just go down the row with the eye dropper administering the wormer under the feathers. No syringe. With the head light I have both hands free. Easy peasy. No one freaks out and no one to pick up and spread feathers on .

Well take care ,

rancher
